Memos show U.S. hushed up Soviet masscre at Katyn

WARSAW, Poland (AP) ? The American POWs sent secret coded messages to Washington with news of a Soviet atrocity: In 1943 they saw rows of corpses in an advanced state of decay in the Katyn forest, on the western edge of Russia, proof that the killers could not have been the Nazis who had only recently occupied the area.

The testimony about the infamous massacre of Polish officers might have lessened the tragic fate that befell Poland under the Soviets, some scholars believe. Instead, it mysteriously vanished into the heart of American power. The long-held suspicion is that President Franklin Delano Roosevelt didn't want to anger Josef Stalin, an ally whom the Americans were counting on to defeat Germany and Japan during World War II.

Documents released Monday and seen in advance by The Associated Press lend weight to the belief that suppression within the highest levels of the U.S. government helped cover up Soviet guilt in the killing of some 22,000 Polish officers and other prisoners in the Katyn forest and other locations in 1940.

The evidence is among about 1,000 pages of newly declassified documents that the United States National Archives is releasing Monday and putting online. Historians who saw the material days before the official release describe it as important and shared some highlights with the AP. The most dramatic revelation so far is the evidence of the secret codes sent by the two American POWs ? something historians were unaware of and which adds to evidence that the Roosevelt administration knew of the Soviet atrocity relatively early on.

The declassified documents also show the United States maintaining that it couldn't conclusively determine guilt until a Russian admission in 1990 ? a statement that looks improbable given the huge body of evidence of Soviet guilt that had already emerged decades earlier. Historians say the new material helps to flesh out the story of what the U.S. knew and when.

The Soviet secret police killed the 22,000 Poles with shots to the back of the head. Their aim was to eliminate a military and intellectual elite that would have put up stiff resistance to Soviet control. The men were among Poland's most accomplished ? officers and reserve officers who in their civilian lives worked as doctors, lawyers, teachers, or as other professionals. Their loss has proven an enduring wound to the Polish nation.

In the early years after the war, outrage by some American officials over the concealment inspired the creation of a special U.S. Congressional committee to investigate Katyn.

In a final report released in 1952, the committee declared there was no doubt of Soviet guilt, and called the massacre "one of the most barbarous international crimes in world history." It found that Roosevelt's administration suppressed public knowledge of the crime, but said it was out of military necessity. It also recommended the government bring charges against the Soviets at an international tribunal ? something never acted upon.

Despite the committee's strong conclusions, the White House maintained its silence on Katyn for decades, showing an unwillingness to focus on an issue that would have added to political tensions with the Soviets during the Cold War.

___

It was May 1943 in the Katyn forest, a part of Russia the Germans had seized from the Soviets in 1941. A group of American and British POWs were taken against their will by their German captors to witness a horrifying scene at a clearing surrounded by pine trees: mass graves tightly packed with thousands of partly mummified corpses in well-tailored Polish officers uniforms.

The Americans ? Capt. Donald B. Stewart and Lt. Col. John H. Van Vliet Jr. ? hated the Nazis and didn't want to believe the Germans. They had seen German cruelty up close, and the Soviets, after all, were their ally. The Germans were hoping to use the POWs for propaganda, and to drive a wedge between the Soviet Union and its Western Allies.

But returning to their POW camps, the Americans carried a conviction that they had just witnessed overwhelming proof of Soviet guilt. The corpses' advanced state of decay told them the killings took place much earlier in the war, when the Soviets still controlled the area. They also saw Polish letters, diaries, identification tags, news clippings and other objects ? none dated later than spring of 1940 ? pulled from the graves. The evidence that did the most to convince them was the good state of the men's boots and clothing: That told them the men had not lived long after being captured.

Stewart testified before the 1951 Congressional committee about what he saw, and Van Vliet wrote reports on Katyn in 1945 and 1950, the first of which mysteriously disappeared. But the newly declassified documents show that both sent secret encoded messages while still in captivity to army intelligence with their opinion of Soviet culpability. It's an important revelation because it shows the Roosevelt administration was getting information early on from credible U.S. sources of Soviet guilt ? yet still ignored it for the sake of the alliance with Stalin.

One shows head of Army intelligence, Gen. Clayton Bissell, confirming that some months after the 1943 visit to Katyn by the U.S. officers, a coded request by MIS-X, a unit of military intelligence, was sent to Van Vliet requesting him "to state his opinion of Katyn." Bissell's note said that "it is also understood Col. Van Vliet & Capt. Stewart replied."

MIS-X was devoted to helping POWs held behind German lines escape; it also used the prisoners to gather intelligence.

A statement from Stewart dated 1950 confirms he received and sent coded messages to Washington during the war, including one on Katyn: "Content of my report was aprx (approximately): German claims regarding Katyn substantially correct in opinion of Van Vliet and myself."

The newly uncovered documents also show Stewart was ordered in 1950 ? soon before the Congressional committee began its work ? never to speak about a secret message on Katyn.

Krystyna Piorkowska, author of the recently published book "English-Speaking Witnesses to Katyn: Recent Research," discovered the documents related to the coded messages more than a week ago. She was one of several researchers who saw the material ahead of the public release.

She had already determined in her research that Van Vliet and Stewart were "code users" who had gotten messages out about other matters. But this is the first discovery of them communicating about Katyn, she said.

Another Katyn expert aware of the documents, Allen Paul, author of "Katyn: Stalin's Massacre and the Triumph of Truth," told the AP the find is "potentially explosive." He said the material does not appear in the record of the Congressional hearings in 1951-52, and appears to have also been suppressed.

He argues that the U.S. cover-up delayed a full understanding in the United States of the true nature of Stalinism ? an understanding that came only later, after the Soviets exploded an atomic bomb in 1949 and after Poland and the rest of Eastern Europe were already behind the Iron Curtain.

"The Poles had known long before the war ended what Stalin's true intentions were," Paul said. "The West's refusal to hear them out on the Katyn issue was a crushing blow that made their fate worse."

The historical record carries other evidence Roosevelt knew in 1943 of Soviet guilt. One of the most important messages that landed on FDR's desk was an extensive and detailed report British Prime Minister Winston Churchill sent him. Written by the British ambassador to the Polish government-in-exile in London, Owen O'Malley, it pointed to Soviet guilt at Katyn.

"There is now available a good deal of negative evidence," O'Malley wrote, "the cumulative effect of which is to throw serious doubt on Russian disclaimers of responsibility for the massacre."

___

It wasn't until the waning days of Soviet hegemony over Eastern Europe that reformist leader Mikhail Gorbachev publicly admitted to Soviet guilt at Katyn, a key step in Polish-Russian reconciliation.

The silence by the U.S. government has been a source of deep frustration for many Polish-Americans. One is Franciszek Herzog, 81, a Connecticut man whose father and uncle died in the massacre. After Gorbachev's 1990 admission, he was hoping for more openness from the U.S. as well and made three attempts to obtain an apology from President George H.W. Bush.

"It will not resurrect the men," he wrote to Bush. "But will give moral satisfaction to the widows and orphans of the victims."

A reply he got in 1992, from the State Department, did not satisfy him. His correspondence with the government is also among the newly released documents and was obtained early by the AP from the George Bush Presidential Library.

The letter, dated Aug. 12, 1992, and signed by Thomas Gerth, then deputy director of the Office of Eastern European Affairs, shows the government stating that it lacked irrefutable evidence until Gorbachev's admission:

"The U.S. government never accepted the Soviet Government's claim that it was not responsible for the massacre. However, at the time of the Congressional hearings in 1951-1952, the U.S. did not possess the facts that could clearly refute the Soviets' allegations that these crimes were committed by the Third Reich. These facts, as you know, were not revealed until 1990, when the Russians officially apologized to Poland."

Herzog expressed frustration at that reply.

"There's a big difference between not knowing and not wanting to know," Herzog said. "I believe the U.S. government didn't want to know because it was inconvenient to them."

(AP) ? After 611 days away, Peyton Manning couldn't wait to get back on the field. Ben Roethlisberger seemed determined to keep him on the sideline.

Manning overcame Pittsburgh's 10-minute advantage in time of possession and led a hurry-up offense that helped the Broncos beat the Steelers 31-19 on Sunday night in his Denver debut.

"It's just one game. I try to keep it in perspective," Manning said. "I know how hard I've worked to get to this point. I know how much help that I've gotten along the way, from a lot of people. I'm very grateful for that. It's special. I will definitely say it's special."

The four-time MVP coming off four neck surgeries that wiped out his final season in Indianapolis last year completed 19 of 26 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns. He was sacked twice and bounced up both times without trouble.

Manning got a big assist from another big-time free agent, cornerback Tracy Porter, whose 43-yard interception return of Roethlisberger's pass with 2 minutes left and the Broncos clinging to a six-point lead sealed the victory.

"I should've called timeout," Roethlisberger said. "The play clock was running down, I hate to burn timeouts. I should've. We were kind of all over the place.

"There's no one to blame but myself. I already told my teammates and coaches that it's my fault. It's on me. It's disappointing. I hate to let my team down, my coaches, the fans. That loss is squarely on my shoulders. I'll take that and get better and learn from it."

Manning, jettisoned by the Colts in March after missing all of last season with a nerve injury that weakened his throwing arm, took just two snaps in the third quarter. But one was a 71-yard touchdown throw to Demaryius Thomas, Manning's first as a Bronco and the 400th of his career.

He reached the milestone in his 208th career game. Dan Marino did it in his 227th game and Brett Favre in his 228th.

"I love those guys," Manning said. "Brett and Dan are two of my favorite quarterbacks of all time. I don't feel like I belong in their category. But to be sort of mentioned among them is a true honor."

Manning, however, didn't even keep the ball for his trophy case.

"I talked to him after the game and said, 'You're going to let me keep the ball right?' He got one of the game balls, so he gave me that ball," Thomas said. "That's great to be able to catch his 400th. Hopefully he'll sign it for me. I can go back and show my grandkids in the record book."

Manning, who hadn't played in a game that counted since Jan. 8, 2011, spent much of his night on the sideline as Roethlisberger led a clock-chewing offense that had Denver's defenders gassed and Manning antsy as the Steelers converted 11 of 19 third downs.

"That's what Peyton kept saying to me: 'You guys killed us on third down.' We did," Roethlisberger said. "But at the end of the day it doesn't matter when you lose the game."

At one point, Roethlisberger had taken 30 snaps to Manning's one ? a kneel-down ? during two monstrous drives that spanned halftime.

"Roethlisberger was awesome on third down," Manning said. "Wasn't much fun sitting on the bench there all night. Great job by our defense in the end, getting that turnover."

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said playing keep-away from Manning was the game plan.

"That was our intention," Tomlin said. "We need to possess the ball, we needed to get stops and time of possession is just that, though you look at the scoreboard, they got it done, we didn't. The plan didn't come to fruition."

Whenever he was between the lines, Manning was masterful.

After going to the no-huddle midway through the first half, he led Denver on three straight 80-yard touchdown drives, picking apart Pittsburgh's defense with precision.

"It helped a lot," Manning said of the hurry-up. "We're going to use the no-huddle as a change-up. Once we did it, it went so well, the coaches kind of said stay with it. I was kind of afraid that might happen."

So were the Steelers.

The Broncos' last drive stalled at the Steelers 8 and they settled for Matt Prater's short field goal and a 25-19 lead with 3 minutes left.

That was more than enough time for Roethlisberger to beat them, Manning figured.

Porter, though, stepped in front of Emmanuel Sanders and returned the interception 43 yards for the score, and Roethlisberger was sacked three times on his last possession after going down just twice all night.

"Better late than never," said Von Miller, who had two of those sacks.

"That was a great feeling," Manning said. "I hated having to settle for a field goal down there. ... I wanted to get a touchdown, make it a two-score game. You don't like giving the ball to Ben on a two-minute drive. Our defense had been bending all game but never quite breaking. That was a huge play by Porter. Von was bringing the pass rush at the end there, that was fun to see."

Manning's 71-yard TD to Thomas gave Denver a 14-13 lead, but the drive took all of 36 seconds, and the Steelers had possession for the rest of the third quarter, running 27 plays against a gassed Denver defense.

Roethlisberger found Mike Wallace for a 3-yard TD strike early in the fourth quarter but his 2-point conversion attempt was knocked down by Justin Bannan, leaving the Steelers with a 19-14 lead.

Manning drove the Broncos 80 yards, hitting tight end Jacob Tamme for the score from a yard out, then hit running back Willis McGahee for the 2-point conversion and a 22-19 lead.

Although this one was a screen pass, Thomas' long TD was reminiscent of his 80-yard touchdown on a crossing pattern on the first play of overtime that beat the Steelers 29-23 in the AFC wild-card game eight months ago when Denver was Tim Tebow's turf.

That changed when Manning was released by the Colts on March 7 after 14 seasons and chose Denver as his destination for his comeback two weeks later after a frenzied free agency tour. The Broncos sent Tebow to Broadway 24 hours later.

Manning looked as good as ever Sunday night.

"What can you say?" Steelers safety Troy Polamalu said. "I mean, he's Peyton Manning. He's the same Manning. Everything anybody has ever said about him is probably the same thing I would say tonight."

Notes: Denver DT Ty Warren, playing in his first game since 2009, sprained an elbow in the first half and didn't return. ... Also hurt in the first half were Steelers O-linemen Marcus Gilbert (knee) and Ramon Foster (eye). ... Steelers star LB James Harrison (knee) sat out, as did S Ryan Clark, who has sickle cell trait that makes playing at altitude dangerous.

91% Compliance

Usually I write a review the day after I first watch the movie as I like to give it time to sink in. It's been three days since I watched "Compliance" and I'm still not sure whether it's a good film or not. There are two things I am sure of though; this is one of the must see films of the year and Pat Healy is American cinema's best kept secret, a chameleon of an actor. Remember the name. The event portrayed here is non-fictional, based on true events which occurred over seventy times in thirty states across America. A tele-marketer, skilled at manipulating people over the phone, would call various retail establishments posing as a police officer and accuse a staff member of stealing money from a customer. Here his target is ChickWich, a fictional fast food chain managed by middle-aged Dowd and staffed by a variety of young slackers. Dowd receives a call from the fake cop, Healy, who informs her that Walker, a pretty young staff member, has committed the theft. Dowd takes Walker into a backroom where most of the film plays out. Healy claims he is busy with a larger investigation at Walker's home and won't be able to visit the restaurant anytime soon. Walker is given a choice, she can spend the night in jail or she can allow Dowd to strip search her on the premises. Both Dowd and Walker are initially uncomfortable with this suggestion but decide it's the easier of the two options. Despite carrying out his request, Healy isn't fully satisfied and makes more demands which escalate in their oddness. Due to it being a busy Friday night, Dowd calls her boyfriend Camp, who she has misled her employees into believing is her fiance, and asks him to keep watch on Walker. She passes him the phone and Healy realizes he can really push the limits with this guy. Up to this point the movie had me hooked, mainly due to the fantastic performances by Dowd and Healy, but the introduction of Camp had me mentally stepping back from what I was watching. Apparently what transpires actually occurred in real life but it's so hard to swallow that it damages the integrity of the film. I had to keep reminding myself this was a true story as it plays out like a scenario from a cheap porno flick. Part of the problem is the acting by Walker and Camp, simply not strong enough to make the situation believable. I don't live in America so can't comment on the attitudes toward authority figures in that country but certainly where I'm from the public maintains a healthy mistrust of those in positions of power. That's probably the case across Europe where I imagine audiences will struggle with the film. By sticking to the truth, Zobel has ironically made his movie a punishing test of the viewer's ability to suspend disbelief. What alternative does he have? A European cut where Dowd tells Healy to screw himself within five minutes? Americans will undoubtedly find this movie a lot more involving. Us disobedient Europeans will have to keep telling ourselves "It's not just a movie!"

Muscular Man Boobs Scare Up Planet Fitness Membership

Muscular Man Boobs Scare Up Planet Fitness Membership

You know when you see some street freak or maybe it's even your friend acting so beyond weird that you blurt out, "what planet are you from?" Well, Planet Fitness has tapped into that sentiment and in its first commercial for the client, Mullen gives as yet another example of the "what planet are you from" scenario. In the ad, we see a a guy signing up to join Planet Fitness. But, he's just not any guy. He's a bit off. He's a bit full of himself. He's a bit in need of the guys in white coats with a strait jacket. But the cute Planet Fitness employee doesn't freak out. She just sits quietly as this man does, apparently, what he needs to do to make himself feel he's the man he really is.

Analysis: Returning Congress faces big tasks, likely to do little

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - One of the most unpopular and unproductive Congresses in modern history returns on Monday from a five-week recess, facing a crush of big tasks, few of which will likely get done.

Lawmakers are expected to be in Washington for only about two weeks between now and the November 6 election, making their return to the capital little more than a pit stop.

"Everyone wants to get out of town -- fast," said a top Senate aide, voicing the sentiment on both sides of the political aisle.

Quickie sessions are the rule rather than the exception in election years, and lawmakers may be around just long enough to approve a must-pass spending bill to keep the government running before racing home to campaign for their seats.

This year they do will so as voters seem more frustrated than ever with their partisan gridlock.

Unfinished business on Capitol Hill includes bills to overhaul the massive farm law, improve cyber security for the nation's critical infrastructure, downsize the ailing postal service, and normalize trade with Russia.

The most urgent item -- making sure Congress does not trigger a recession early next year -- is by all accounts on hold until after the election, when lawmakers will attempt to head off trouble of their own making: tax increases and automatic spending cuts that threaten to send the United States over what's been called "a fiscal cliff."

Corporate leaders say the uncertainty surrounding this single issue is already weighing on business decisions, particularly in the defense industry.

A preventable recession, induced by a forewarned Congress, would be a first. Most still believe lawmakers will avoid going over the cliff, some how, some way.

"My faith in Congress is pretty minimal," said Dan Ripp of Bradley Woods, a New York-based public policy research firm.

"But members of Congress are excellent at self-preservation and that is why I think they will do something to avoid 'the cliff' and voter backlash," Ripp said.

Nevertheless, any progress may depend on how party leaders analyze the results of the election contest between President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

Lawmakers will calculate whether they have something to gain -- or lose -- by waiting until the convening of a new Congress in January to deal with tax and spending issues.

LEGISLATIVE GRIDLOCK

Thus a pre-election paralysis has taken hold on top of the gridlock that has afflicted Washington since the 2010 election, when Democrats lost control of the House of Representatives and government became officially divided along party lines.

Just 61 bills have become law in 2012, the fewest in a year in more than 60 years, according to records compiled by the House clerk's office.

In 2011, 90 bills became law, down from 258 the year before, when Democrats controlled both chambers and the White House.

"The metaphor for congressional ineptitude is its inability to even reform the postal service," said Greg Valliere of the Potomac Research Group, a private firm that tracks Washington for institutional investors.

"Members in both parties talk tough about reducing deficits, but they are scared to close a local post office because they will get angry letters from constituents," Valliere said.

"If you can't reform the post office, how are you ever going to reform entitlements" like the Social Security retirement program and Medicare health program, he said.

Amid budget battles last year, Congress pushed the government to the brink of a shutdown and an unprecedented default, generating plenty of public disgust, anger and fear.

During the past year or so, Congress's approval ratings have been in or at single digits, the lowest numbers ever.

Even so, most lawmakers seem certain to win another term, largely because of the advantages of incumbency, such as name recognition and the ability to raise money.

Larry Sabato of the University of Virginia's Center for Politics said voters were puzzled as to why lawmakers cannot be more productive.

"Most people just don't understand why Democrats and Republicans can't get together and split at least some of their differences," Sabato said.

Members of Congress certainly have plenty of time to clear their heads, stretch their legs and literally find common ground outside of Washington.

While the average American worker has a median household income of about $50,000 and gets 13 days of annual paid vacation, lawmakers command salaries of $174,000 and will have recesses this year totaling more than four months.

Lawmakers do not thought call their recesses vacation. Instead, they refer to many of them as "district work periods" used to meet with constituents.

Democrats and Republicans spent some of their recent recess at their political parties' respective national conventions.

However, with Congress in such low esteem, lawmakers maintained low profiles at the nationally broadcast events, which featured prime-time speeches by Obama and Romney.

On a recent rainy day, out-of-town visitors to the U.S. Capitol voiced frustrations.

"I want to have faith in them, I really do, but it is hard," said Ronda Rieves, a Florida pastor, accompanied by her husband, Franklin, a construction worker.

"The only time we hear from them is every two years, on a recording that says, 'Vote for me,'" she said.

Edward Harrison, a Colorado chemist, said: "We have the government we deserve. They represent who we are -- partisan and unwilling to compromise for personal or ideological reasons."

Despite this, Harrison said he remained "pragmatically optimistic."

"Congress made it through the Civil War," he said. "They can make it through this."

Devon Walker Injury: Tulane Safety Taken Off Field In Ambulance After Collision Against Tulsa (VIDEO)

TULSA, Okla. ? Tulane safety Devon Walker fractured his spine in a head-to-head collision with a teammate during a game in Tulsa, the team doctor said Saturday.

Dr. Buddy Savoie said during a postgame news conference that Walker is in stable condition and will need spinal surgery in the "the next day or two."

"He was stable when we transported him," Savoie said. "I do not think, based on the information we have, his life was ever in danger."

Tulsa was leading 35-3 and facing a fourth-and-2 with the ball at the 33-yard line when the Golden Hurricane called timeout. Tulane then called timeout.

When play resumed, Tulsa quarterback Cody Green tossed a short pass to Willie Carter, who caught it at about the 28, and turned upfield. He was tackled around the 18-yard line, with defensive tackle Julius Warmsley and Walker sandwiching him and apparently smashing the crowns of their helmets into each other.

Medical personnel from both teams came out about 12:37 p.m. to attend to Walker as he lay on the field.

Savoie said after the game that Walker "actually never completely lost consciousness" and was breathing.

About 12:52 p.m., he was lifted onto a stretcher and loaded into a waiting ambulance about two minutes later. The ambulance drove off the field about 1 p.m.

FOX Sports reported a hush went over the crowd at H.A. Stadium as Walker was attended to on the field, and that several coaches were in tears. Spectators bowed their heads as someone on the field led the stadium in prayer.

The game resumed at 1:20 p.m.

Walker is a senior majoring in cell and molecular biology. His brother, Raynard, told The Associated Press that their mother was watching the game on television when her son was injured.

Tulane head coach Curtis Johnson said after the 45-10 loss that while Walker was on the field, Johnson told Walker that he was praying for him and that help was on the way.

He said the mood among players was somber, and called the day his most difficult ever.

"Just seeing a young man, one of our family members, on the ground. It was just difficult for our guys," Johnson said in the postgame conference. "It's no excuse, but I don't know if they could have focused.

"It was tremendous that they finished the game, as I thought about just saying `Hey look, let's not do anything else. Let's just get on the road and go.' "

Associated Press writers Michael Kunzelman in New Orleans and Jeff Latzke in Oklahoma City contributed to this report.

At Wii U sneak preview, Nintendo tries to win back the love of its fans

5 hrs.

The line out the door at this trendy venue wasn?t for a band ? it was for Mario.

Nintendo fans packed a rented space in Seattle?s Capitol Hill neighborhood Friday night for their first official date with Wii U, the next big thing from the iconic game company.

The main attraction: Wii U?s motion-sensitive, touch-screen, tablet-style?GamePad controller.?It acts as a secondary display in the hands of gamers, complementing the main screen with related content, information, controls and additional ways of interacting with and playing games.

Nintendo has been holding these exclusive ?Wii U Experience? sneak peeks in cities around the country, but the series taking place this weekend is a homestand, in the backyard of Redmond-based Nintendo of America, the longtime U.S headquarters of the Japanese video-game giant.

If this were politics, it would be called rallying the base. A favorable reaction from hard-core fans would give the company a solid foundation for the Wii U?s debut later this year. And Nintendo desperately needs that support as it tries to come back from a dramatic slump in its business.

The first Wii, which popularized motion-based controls for game consoles, has experienced a sharp decline in sales after initial record highs. Nintendo has also been struggling to recover from a lackluster launch of its 3DS handheld, while stubbornly avoiding the booming world of smartphone apps.?In its latest fiscal year, the company posted?its first annual loss?in at least three decades.

Nintendo is looking to turn things around with Wii U, due out later this year. It will be the first in the industry?s next generation of home consoles, getting Nintendo out ahead of Microsoft and Sony.

On Friday night, with the music thumping inside the Seattle club, the crowd stood three-and four-people deep around kiosks, and filled side rooms featuring many of the Wii U?s upcoming titles ??Nintendo Land,?New Super Mario Bros. U,?Pikmin 3, Ninja Gaiden 3,?Batman Arkham City Armored Edition?and many others.

The crowd included many members of the Club Nintendo rewards program. They?re some of the company?s most loyal supporters, but a lot of them have strayed over the past couple years. Many people at the event admitted that they?ve relegated their original Wiis to the closet or the garage in favor of a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 ? both of which now offer their own motion-based control systems, following in the footsteps and in many ways overshadowing the Wii.

So what do they think of the Wii U controller? The reaction Friday night was generally positive, but not universally so. Here?s a representative sampling of comments from the gamers I spoke with at the event,?after they had a chance to play several of the games on display.

  • "It feels really good in your hands. The definition on that (GamePad) screen is really clear."
  • "It takes a little getting used to. Once I had a few more minutes with it, I?d probably get it."
  • "They?re using it in cool ways. It?s like a big DS. You have two screens (handheld and TV)."
  • "It?s fantastic ? lighter than I thought it would be, and much more comfortable. I thought it would be bulky and heavy, but it?s nice and comfortable and light."
  • "I?ll probably just wait for my friends to buy it and play it there."
  • "It looks expensive."

That last comment was not a compliment. It was a concern, expressed by longtime Nintendo gamer Trisha Knobel of Auburn, Wash. Nintendo hasn?t yet announced the price for the Wii U, and the uncertainty is one of the things causing gamers to stop short of unbridled enthusiasm.

But for Knobel, there?s more to it than that.

"It seems like everything has been done before," she said of the games. "It?s all repeats. Number 3s, Number 2s. Nothing new, nothing super exciting," ?As an example, she cited Nintendo?s?ZombiU, saying it essentially was a knock-off of Left 4 Dead.

Others were more encouraged by what they experienced, with several citing the Wii U?s higher-definition graphics as a noticeable step up from the original Wii.

John Leen of Seattle said he liked how the GamePad was used in the multiplayer?Luigi?s Ghost Mansion, one of the games in the?Nintendo Land?suite. The person playing the ghost uses the GamePad to see the ghost?s location and move it through the map. The people playing the other characters can?t see the ghost on the TV screen, but their traditional Wii controllers vibrate when it?s close, and they can expose and attack the ghost by shining their flashlights on it.

"I was skeptical (of the GamePad controller), because I didn?t know what they were going to do with it, but these games seem fun," Leen?said, praising the "tight design" and edgy competitiveness of the?Ghost Mansion?gameplay.

David Lewis of?Gig Harbor, Wash. called the Wii U "definitely a great party device" to play with friends, but after trying some of the games, he was still on the fence about whether he would buy one.

After an extended session with?ZombiU, Brandon Law of Seattle said he was?almost?sure he would buy a Wii U. "It?s looking pretty positive right now," he said. However, he added, "I still have to know the price before I?ll be committed."

See GeekWire for more pictures from the event.

Connect?with?Todd Bishop of GeekWire on Facebook and Twitter,?when he isn't trying to outmaneuver the ghost in Luigi's mansion.

Innovative Gutter Solutions Uses Siding-Master System in Vinyl Siding

Innovative Gutter Solutions, a Wisconsin-based company that offers top-quality gutter and siding products, is using the Siding-Master system for vinyl siding installations.

Tweet This Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin (July 26, 2012) -- Innovative Gutter Solutions, a Wisconsin-based company that offers top-quality gutter and siding products, is using the Siding-Master system for vinyl siding installations. Siding-Master is an effective solution to problems associated with nailing, stapling, and aligning vinyl siding. As an added benefit, it also provides a rain screen.

Siding-Master holds vinyl siding in place as it is installed directly on the walls, and siding is attached to it. Siding panels, hence, can be installed cleanly despite the structural flaws of wall exteriors. Siding-Master can be fitted onto most facades, including those made of house wrap, stucco, and more.

Because it helps form a space between the siding panels and the exterior walls, Siding-Master also helps create a rain screen. A rain screen is one of the many benefits that come with Siding-Master. It prevents water leaks and allows air to flow freely in a wall, helping improve ventilation, reduce moisture levels, prevent mold growth, and keeping walls cool to reduce energy costs.

Innovative Gutter Solutions is a supply company for home improvement businesses, owned by Scott Frey. The company has been providing top-quality gutter and siding products such as gutter protection, gutter accessories, and rain screens since for over a decade. Under Frey's guidance, highly trained professionals strictly follow standards to ensure their installation projects can withstand the elements for a long time.

The gutter systems offered by Innovative Gutter Solutions include Absolute Gutter, BigMouth, LeakProof, SnapLock, and TipLok. The company also offers sidings that feature rainscreens and more.

Individuals who are looking for Siding-Master and other high-quality gutter and rain screen siding products are encouraged to visit www.innovativeguttersolutions.com.
