I think it's important to us because it's the only way we can assure ourselves that we're not crazy, or stupid. There is nothing worse than going through one's entire adult life with unanswered questions.

Unlike many people, as I have recently discovered, I have known since shooting out of the womb that I was gay. I didn't feel compelled to shout it from the rooftops; it was just who I was, and that was that. Bear in mind that in the early '70s, when I was sneaking up on puberty, being gay was not cool. Nobody was gay -- no teachers, classmates, or celebrities (except Liberace), and certainly no characters on sitcoms. Nobody was gay. I felt like I was the only gay person alive, and it was a tragic and devastatingly lonely existence on many levels. I thought a lot about suicide.

To cope with my loneliness, I wrote songs and poetry like a machine, churning them out at an alarming rate, and the running theme of my life was unrequited love. Almost every song I wrote and performed throughout junior and senior high was about loving someone who didn't love me back, and while it sounds quite pitiful now, these tunes made me quite popular among the girls in school. Often, they were unknowingly the very people about whom these morose ditties were written. One such person was Lisa in my 9th-grade class. She was a beautiful and popular cheerleader who was drawn to my music and would sometimes plop down next to me on the floor of the hallway in which I was playing and singing. One day she began to sing along, and I was so tickled that she knew the words to my songs and yet couldn't carry a tune. Somehow, we became unlikely friends, and we spent that whole summer between junior and senior high school getting to know each other.

We attended different high schools, and after that summer was over, she seemed to drop off the face of the Earth. I remember being so hurt and surprised, and I chalked it up to the popular girl not wanting people to know she was friends with that creepy little tomboy who always played guitar in the girls' bathroom.

Seven years passed, and one fall night, my mother handed me an Army business card with a familiar first name written on the back, along with a telephone number. Mom had worked at the same pharmacy for years, and she had worked there that fateful summer, so Lisa knew where to find her in order to find me. I couldn't wait to call her, to see her, to ask her where she had gone. She had cut all her beautiful, blonde hair short, and I was surprised to realize that it wouldn't have mattered if she had shaved her head; she still looked gorgeous to me. It wasn't long before she was confessing her love for me, and thus began a whirlwind romance that burned hot right through Christmas.

She came to the Christmas Eve service at my church, and my Great-Aunt Lolly fell asleep on her shoulder as I rang handbells and sang in the choir. After the service we went back to my house, where I gave her a music box that played "Evergreen," and it was the best Christmas I could remember. I couldn't stop thinking about fate and destiny, about how amazing it was that this person I had felt such a connection with all those years ago had come back to me out of the clear blue sky and professed her love for me. It was meant to be. It was perfect. And I was happy, for the very first time.

Then one night I went to pick her up, and she was gone. Her family was suddenly quite hostile to me, and nobody would tell me where she was or when she would return. It was like a bizarre movie that I had been thrown into, and it went on for weeks... no phone calls, no nothing. I kept showing up at her family home and was repeatedly turned away without explanation. I started driving down her street in hopes of seeing her, but to no avail. Months had passed without answers, then years, when I found myself standing in the Giant helping my mom rent a carpet cleaner and looked up to see her standing in line with her mother, and a baby.

I felt like I had lost my mind, that it had all been some weird dream. I was driving down the road one night and spontaneously traded in my car for a new one, simply because my car was literally haunted by memories of her, and I just couldn't take it anymore.

Over the years I found myself incapable of trusting, and I had several failed relationships whose downfall was entirely my doing. I pushed people away to strike the first blow, to keep from getting hurt, and ended up thrusting myself into more loneliness. I found myself drawn to the unattainable, those I knew could never be mine, for in some strange way, they were safe. If I could not have them, they could never leave me. They could never drop off the face of the Earth and break my heart.

Recently, I had the opportunity to talk to Lisa for the first time in 25 years and finally heard her side of the story. It was her disapproving family that was our undoing. She told me how sorry she was for hurting me, and that after years of living someone else's life, she had finally come to terms with who she is, which made me glad for her. And although I had waited all those years for an apology and was grateful to finally get closure after half a lifetime, I was brought to tears was when she told me that she had known in the 9th grade how much I loved her, and that what I never knew was that she had loved me back. I am not a person who cries, and yet I sat there with the phone to my ear, silently weeping.

I had spent my life believing I had been unloved, and having given my love so freely and honestly all those years ago only to be abandoned without explanation had felt like a cruel joke. And it touched every relationship that followed in one way or another, as all experiences do. Finding out that she loved me that long ago somehow validated me in a strange and wonderful way, and I feel like my emotional passport finally got stamped. I am now free to move about the universe.

If you love someone, tell them. If you don't, tell them that, too. The love we share is a powerful thing, and the love we withhold can be devastating, especially if it's from ourselves.

"Consider, for example, a world in which the Federal Reserve conducts monetary policy so that the price level rises steadily at 2 percent a year. Savers, knowing this, will demand a higher interest rate to compensate them for the lost value of their money. If the Fed generates more inflation than they expected, as it did in the 1970s, then savers will suffer and borrowers benefit. If it undershoots expectations, as it has over the last few years, the reverse will happen. The anti-saver redistribution Paul decries is thus not a consequence of monetary expansion per se, but a consequence of an unpredictedly large expansion. For the same reason, monetary expansion does not necessarily lead to less saving. There is no reason to believe that the real burden of home loans would be any larger in a world with 2 percent inflation than in one with 1 percent inflation."

This would be true if price inflation was entirely caused by factors unrelated to monetary policy actions. If that had been the case we would indeed expect periods of time with unexpectedly high price inflation due to for example crop failures to be compensated by periods of time with unexpectedly low price inflation due to unusually good crops.

But in reality, central banks create price inflation by lowering the real interest rate. They provide free money for the banks at levels below the natural level (time preferences of the population). This in turn enables the banks to lend more which in a fractional reserve banking system means a higher money supply which in turn creates price inflation. Lower real interest rates isn't just the result of higher price inflation, it is in fact the cause.

But what about his argument that savers will demand a higher interest rate? Well, rational savers will indeed do so, but even assuming that all savers are rational (and that's an implausible assumption), it won't matter, because the banks won't need the savers as the central bank can create all the money needed for the banks to lend. All savers can do is either save in foreign currency accounts (which will lower the dollar's value), buy stocks or fixed assets (like real estate or gold) or not save and consume.

Either way, savers behavior can't change the outcome when it comes to real interest rates, at least as long as the central bank is indifferent (or positive) to the inflaionary impact of their money printing. And it should be obvious that the Fed hasn't been significantly deterred from inflating by the effects on price inflation recently.

This point also affect another of Ponnuru's assertions, that Fed monetary policy hasn't enabled government expansion. Lower real interest rates will encourage not just private individuals, families and companies to borrow more, but also government borrowing. And with federal debt at more than $15.4 trillion, or about 100% of GDP (comparable to Portugal) government borrowing enabled by low interest rates have clearly played a role in expanding the size of government.

She said she was forced to live in the basement of the home?at 4609 Treichel St. since about 2006, eating only what she could pick off the floor, find in the laundry or take out of the garbage, and that she has been physically injured by both her father and stepmother.? She?s fifteen now, that puts her at nine or ten, when she was first sent to the basement.? What could a child that old have possibly done, to deserve this?? Forced to drink her own piss?? Eat her own??? Another story I read said that her parents?stuck her face in her own feces, AS IF SHE WERE A DOG?? COME ON MAN!?

A doctor specializing in child abuse who examined the girl Friday said she suffered from ?serial torture with prolonged exposure to definite starvation,??Madison police spokesman Joel DeSpain said.? Dr. Barbara Knox of American Family Children?s Hospital told police the malnutrition the girl suffered ?poses a significant risk of death? and that chronic starvation had caused her puberty to be arrested, the affidavit states. Knox also said that because of the starvation and severe malnutrition, the girl would be at high risk for other disorders and complications that can lead to death.?

DeSpain said a passerby notified McFarland police after seeing the girl walking barefoot and wearing only pajamas a few blocks from her home on Feb. 6. In other words, the girl escaping just to be found on the street, barefoot, in a freezing cold Wisconsin winter, was her?final?option to stay alive.? She would rather risk dying in the street of exposure like an animal, than go on living like that.? How pitiful is that?? This is a child we?re talking about.? No child in America should ever have to contemplate such a thing.? Her parents should be horse whipped!? Paramedics were called to evaluate the girl, who was taken to a Madison hospital.

According to the affidavit, the girl told authorities she fled the residence because she was afraid ?Melinda was going to throw me down the stairs.? She said she had been let out of the basement?to ?clean some papers? for Drabek-Chritton, who became angry because she wasn?t doing it fast enough and threatened to throw her down the stairs.? At 70 pounds, it probably wasn?t that much of a challenge for that COW to do.? According to the affidavit, Drabek-Chritton was home-schooling the girl.? Yeah, sounds like it!

Police searched the home Monday and seized potential evidence, DeSpain said.

Drabek-Chritton has owned the home in the Twin Oaks neighborhood near McFarland since 2005, purchasing it from Habitat for Humanity.? Imagine that, Jimmy Carter has a soft spot for psychotic child abusers.

Perry Ecton, CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Dane County, confirmed Monday evening that Melinda Drabek had applied with Habitat in 2004 and closed on the home in December 2005 as a single mother with two boys.?Ecton said there was no mention of a girl in the application?to his knowledge and that Chad Chritton was referenced in the application as the ?father of one of the boys and a friend ? not living in the home.?? According to at least one of the other stories I read about this incident; when asked about why they had an alarm to alert if the daughter had left the basement, dad said that the rest of the family lived in?FEAR of the girl.? Get this; he said that she was kept in the basement in order to ?protect? everyone else from her bad behavior.? He went on to tell police that they had found knives under the girls bed, and once he had awoken to her standing over him with a knife.?

When confronted by police with these statements, police said that the girl looked ?confused.?

Now to mommy dearest over there?? You remember that mom was ?home schooling? the girl, right?? Well she was, sort of?? During a search of the home, police said that the only school books that they had found, which substantiate the claim of the girl?s stepmother, was a reading book, intended for a 3rd grader, and two other books?which were geared more towards children in the 7th grade.? According to police, the two intended for 7th graders did not appear to have ever been opened!? When police told Mrs. Drabek-Chritton that they wanted to see the girls bedroom, she?initially took the officers to?the upstairs bedroom of her two youngest sons, thinking she was going to pass that?bedroom off, as?her step-daughters.? The bedroom belonged to two boys, one 4, the other 7.

Once they had learned that police were intending to execute a search warrant on their home, Mr. and Mrs. Chritton?moved Drabek?to his grandfathers home, so as to avoid investigators.? Obviously, they must not have thought the girl was lying after all?

As if everything else she had to endure wasn?t bad enough, this guy saw what was happening, and used it to his advantage, in order to get off.

The girl and her two younger half brothers are currently in foster care.? Since being placed in foster care, the girl is reported to have gained 17 pounds and is doing much better.? When she was found, she was reported to have the height of an 11-year-old, and the body weight of a 9 year-old.? Little is know about the condition of the two youngest siblings at this time.

Father, Chritton, is currently being held in Dane County jail?on $22,500 bond.? Mother, Chritton-Drabek,?and son, Drabek?are?also in Dane County.? Chritton-Drabek?is being held on $30,000 bond and Drabek is being held on $25,000.?

The girl?s biological mother has been out of the picture for quite some time.? She is living in another state and is married to a registered sex offender.? She has had no contact with the girl, and had relinquished all of her parental rights to the girl.?

High court blocks Mont. campaign money ruling

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Supreme Court on Friday blocked a Montana court ruling upholding limits on corporate campaign spending. The state court ruling appears to be at odds with the high court's 2010 decision striking down a federal ban on those campaign expenditures.

The justices put the Montana ruling on hold while they consider an appeal from corporations seeking to be free of spending limits. The state argues, and the Montana Supreme Court agreed, that political corruption gave rise to the century-old ban on corporate campaign spending.

In the 2010 Citizens United case, a sharply divided Supreme Court ruled that independent spending by corporations does "not give rise to corruption or the appearance of corruption."

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a dissenter in Citizens United, issued a brief statement for herself and Justice Stephen Breyer saying that campaign spending since the decision makes "it exceedingly difficult to maintain that independent expenditures by corporations 'do not give rise to corruption or the appearance of corruption.'"

Ginsburg appeared to be referring to the rise of unregulated super PACs that have injected millions of dollars into the Republican presidential campaign. She said the case "will give the court an opportunity to consider whether, in light of the huge sums currently deployed to buy candidates' allegiance, Citizens United should continue to hold sway."

The court's action Friday does not mean the justices eventually will hear the case. Their most likely course might be simply reversing the state court ruling.

It probably will be several months before they decide what to do.

American Tradition Partnership, based in Washington, D.C., led the challenge to the state's 1912 Corrupt Practices Act. A lower state court ruled that the state law was unconstitutional in the wake of the Citizens United decision.

But in December, the Montana Supreme Court said the law could remain in place because it was a response to political corruption and allows for some corporate spending.

Montana holds primary elections on June 5, and American Tradition Partnership and two other corporations wanted to be free of the state limits in time to influence those elections.

Montana Attorney General Steve Bullock said corporations are no longer bound by the state law.

But, Bullock said, "I am encouraged that the Supreme Court will give this careful consideration and I look forward to continuing to fight for Montana in defending our century-old law."

The decision to block the Montana's Supreme Court's ruling is a win for everyone's First Amendment rights, said the American Tradition Partnership.

"Stripping people of their right to engage in political speech because you do not like the identity of the speaker is an assault on the republic's founding principles," the partnership added.

Papa called and wished us a Happy Valentines Day before he had to head off for his training. Selena was thrilled to find this poodle in a bag that Papa had bought for her before he left. She quickly named the poodle puff.

While we do not celebrate Valentines Day in any traditional fashion, it seemed very strange to not have Papa at home with us this year. It was really kind of lonely. I guess it didn?t help that Selena and I were not feeling very well either. Selena had been sick the day before, and I had hoped she would be feeling better by morning. We woke to me not feeling so well. We ended up sending our craft supplies off with a friend for Cubbies and stayed home.

I tried to get Selena to decorate one of the Valentine craft projects that I had prepared, but she wasn?t even feeling up to that. Our friend is going to bring by her Valentines from Cubbies later though, that should cheer Selena up a bit.

She was surprised when we got our school books in the mail today. She looked them over and announced, I am an official Kindergartner now. She was pretty excited when packed in the box there were a couple of great surprises.

While she didn?t get to play with the play money today, she did have hours of fun making patterns on the abacus. Now I am just trying to figure out when we will begin her official Kindergarten journey, if we will begin now or wait until Fall. Oh heck, I think you know the answer to that, we won?t be long before the books will come out and we will begin learning.

The curriculum I chose to go with came from Keepers of Faith. The Kindergarten material pretty much covers phonics very heavily, and learning to write. As the year progresses though the material gets pretty tough, learning to pronounce words that I have never seen in any Kindergarten curriculum, let alone, first or even second grade materials. I did order some Kumon workbooks for beginning math and some fun cutting and mazes. I think Selena will have a great Kindergarten.
