Our family only lives about 30-40 minutes away and we see them frequently, but we were so sick of running around on the holidays.? Sometimes we would literally go to three dinners in one day.? It was crazy.? Even before we had kids we kept telling our families that once we had kids we weren't going to do the run around anymore.? We just explained that we wanted to be home with our family and we would find a way to celebrate with them.? The compromise we've made is one family a day.? That allows us to spend time at home and time with our extended family.
This year it went so-so.? We went to FIL's for Christmas Eve, which we always do.? But that means we miss out on my extended family's Christmas.? However, it's the only holiday FIL gets all year and I felt like immediate family beats out extended family (which is something we always say when we have to choose one over the other).? We went to my mom's on Christmas day in the afternoon.? It was so nice to spend the morning at home just the three of us.? Micah got to play with some of his presents, we had a nice breakfast and then we all took a nap together.? Seriously, it was heavenly.? We spent New Year's day with MIL.? She hated it.? She complained about how Christmas was over and blah, blah, blah.? I completely understand her point and agree with her, but one BIL lives out of state and refuses to come in on Christmas so we figured it was better for us all to be together at the same time rather than her have several Christmases with each brother separately.? Next year we'll try to do Christmas with her closer to the actual day, but really that's all dependent on BIL (MIL wants us to alternate Christmas with her every other year, but as long as BIL refuses to come to town, we refuse to be the only ones to not be with my family...we want us all to be together at the same time).
