Chip Kidd Turns To Graphic Novels in Batman: Death By Design

Chip Kidd is a design genius. In addition to having designed hundreds of book covers (including the one for my favorite novel, The Secret History by Donna Tartt), he?s also worked on created some very impressive tomes on superheroes, including the eye-catching, lightning bolt cut-out cover for Shazam! The Golden Age of the World?s Mightiest Mortal. ?He?s also a Batman fanatic, having produced several titles focusing on the Caped Crusader, and he collects Batman items as well, having documented them in the book Batman Collected.

His newest book again takes aim at the Dark Knight, but this time it uses Gotham City as the main character, showing Batman as a product of the city and focusing on its iconic design. Rather than being a meta-book about the world of Batman, Kidd is telling a Batman story this time, but with a unique twist by examining the city where he dwells. Recalling Fritz Lang?s Metropolis and other urban / gothic locales, this graphic novel is written and designed by Kidd, while artist Dave Taylor provides the visuals. Kidd isn?t just a designer, as evidenced by his novels like The Cheese Monkeys and The Learners, and we can?t wait to sink our eyes into this book.

Primed to be one of the most talked about original graphic novels of the year, Batman: Death By Design?crafts a mystery around the architecture and design of Gotham City itself. Exploring the sinister truth behind the destruction of Gotham?s most iconic historical landmarks, the story is realized by the collaboration of four-time Eisner award winning writer/designer Chip Kidd and critically acclaimed artist Dave Taylor. The unique take on the Batman mythology is set against the period backdrop of an expansive Gotham City construction boom, combining visual and thematic elements from Fritz Lang?s Metropolis, Ayn Rand?sThe Fountainhead?and Elia Kazan?s?The Waterfront.

A renowned Batman fanatic whose love of the character has been profiled in?The New York Times, Kidd is also a?New York Times?bestselling novelist, graphic designer and publishing industry wunderkind. His unique look at the iconic hero is realized by Taylor?s rich illustrations, which capture the flavor of Gotham as it?s never been seen. A former professional drummer, Taylor?s previous Batman work includes Batman: Shadow of the Bat and Batman & Superman: World?s Finest.

Batman: Death By Design will be released in comic book stores on May 30 and in bookstores on June 5. No traditional superhero slugfest, Batman: Death by Design?examines the pop culture icon as a product of his environment?a thriving metropolis as fantastic and idiosyncratic as Batman himself.

Chip Kidd?is a graphic designer and writer living in New York City and Stonington, Connecticut. His first novel, The Cheese Monkeys, was a national bestseller and a?New York TimesNotable Book. His first book,?Batman Collected, was awarded the Design Distinction award from?ID?magazine. He is the co-author and designer of the two-time Eisner award-winning book?Batman Animated.?He is the editor-at-large for Pantheon, where he has overseen the publication of Chris Ware?s?Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth, Dan Clowes?s?David Boring, and the definitive book of the art of Charles Schulz,?Peanuts?(designed, edited, and with commentary by Kidd). He has also written about graphic design and popular culture for?The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, Details,?The New York Observer,McSweeney?s, Vogue, The New York Post, ID,?and?Print.
