Justice Department clears Google of WiFi wiretapping violations

Justice Department clears Google of WiFi wiretapping violations

Two years ago, Google drove its way into a fair amount of hot water when it accidentally (as was claimed) scooped up private data over WiFi while collecting Street View and location data. Now, the Justice Department has cleared the prolific mapsters of the wiretapping violations. The DOJ made its decision not to push for prosecution based on reports from employees and investigating key documents reports Wired. The Wiretap Act (which is the relevant one here) was argued to only pertain to "traditional radio services," by US District Judge James Ware, but neither the DOJ or FCC said they could find any evidence that Google accessed the date it snared. In an extra move of openness, the search giant has also released the entire FCC report on the Street View investigation (redacted to protect identities) which can be found in the more coverage link. So, next time you see the famous camera-topped wagons roll around, you can leave your tin hat in the closet.

Achievement Unlocked: Apple Wins Applecom.com And Appleprinters.com After WIPO Complaint

apple_rainbow_logoApple still doesn't own iPad.com, apple.co.uk or many other domains that contain its name or names of its products, but it is now the proud owner of applecom.com and appleprinters.com -- two domains that were the subject of a complaint Apple made to the World Intellectual Property Organization complaint Apple made about a month ago. If you now visit those URLs, they automatically redirect to Apple's main site.

Photo of Falling Bear on College Campus Defies Description

A bear can be seen falling from a tree in a truly memorable image after being tranquilized by police in Boulder, Co., this week. Fortunately, he's doing fine.

The young bear, estimated to weigh between 150-200 pounds, had somehow wandered onto the University of Colorado campus and climbed into a tree.

While it's never funny that an animal has to be tranquilized, all ended well. He landed safely on a mattress and was released into the wild when he woke up:

Falling Bear

"[The bear] was tranquilized by the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Department and it fell onto some mats that the Rec Center provided," CU Police said.

"It was placed in a cage, relocated at a higher elevation and released."

Before it was tranquilized and immortalized in this photo, the bear spent about two hours in a tree near the campus dorms, terrifying students.

On Tuesday, another family of black bears made the news, literally, after wandering onto the set and interrupting a news report in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

The University of Colorado was also in the news for another viral story this week, after this tipsy member of the student body hilariously posed with President Obama.

PSA: Space Shuttle Enterprise flying over NYC this morning

Space Shuttle Enterprise

JFK may be a place that many, many people have gone to before, but it's safe to say that the Space Shuttle Enterprise will be going there boldly. Much like the Space Shuttle Discovery turned heads in DC last week, Space Shuttle Enterprise will be stopping traffic in New York City today. NASA has confirmed that today's 747-100 ferry flight across Manhattan is a "Go" and that the duo will "fly at a relatively low altitude over various parts of the New York City metropolitan area on Friday" before landing at JFK. The Shuttle will then, in the coming weeks, be put on a ferry of a floating variety and brought to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. Today's flying tour is scheduled to take place between 9:30 and 11:30 am and... oh look, at the time, we must be going.

Update: NASA has confirmed takeoff from Dulles! The flight plan is not known, but as before your best bet is to follow the #spottheshuttle hashtag on Twitter.

Bodacious Longboarding Babes Dominate a Downhill [Video]

Watch Anna and her friend utterly destroy the Maryhill downhill as part of the Maryhill Freeride 2012. It was likely shot in Maryhill, Washington, though if you have a guess otherwise let us know in the comments. The girls are gorgeous, the scenery is gorgeous, and the ride itself is sublime. Best of all, nobody rivets out and bails. And extra props to the cameraman for filming and skating the course simultaneously. [BoingBoing] More »

Space travel coming to an airport near you? Maybe, if Skylon keeps its cool

reaction-engines-spaceplane-skylon-critical-cooling-tests

Want to get from New York to Perth in under 4 hours, or maybe just head to outer space on a lark? Reaction Engines' "Skylon" mach 5 spaceplane might be your chariot -- or not. Its scheme of ingesting oxygen from the atmosphere instead of stowing it like a 50-year old modern multi-stage rocket sounds good, but the project's fate may hang on critical new tests. Failure is still a possibility, but if the high-speed, superhot gases can be cooled enough for the hybrid Sabre engines to work, and if Reaction Engines Limited can secure another round of funding, punching your space-ticket could soon be a very real possibility.

Those North Koreans are a joke, starting with their stupid leaders, their military imbeciles, the moronic scientists and the state party sheep that cry for their dead leaders while half of the country is dying of starvation.
