Zaka Ashraf hails revival of Indo-Pak ties ? Cricket News Roundup ? Part II ? November 2, 2012
Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Zaka Ashraf on Friday welcomed BCCI?s announcement that it had got clearance to host Pakistan cricket team in a short limited-overs series between December 25 and January 7.
India and Pakistan have not played a bilateral series since 2007, when the latter toured the former. The deadly Mumbai attacks in November 2008 put the cricketing ties between the South Asian neighbours on hold, as the Indian government doubted involvement from across the border. But the BCCI president N Srinivasan earlier this year gave his nod for resumption of the bilateral series. The Indian home ministry also gave its approval for the series, on Tuesday, prompting the BCCI to announce ?the tour is on?.
While speaking to media reporters after the BCCI announced the itinerary, Ashraf hoped the resumption of cricketing ties will help improve relations between the two countries.
"We?re happy to be sending our team to India and we?re hoping this new beginning will continue on regular basis," said the PCB chief. "It?s a great development and we?re confident the revival of bilateral ties will also help improve relations between the two countries and increase people to people contact," he added further.
Former Pakistan skipper Zaheer Abbas has advised the Pakistan Cricket Board to appoint some local person as its national batting coach.
Pakistan cricket team?s poor batting show in the ICC World T20 championship prompted the board to hire services of a full time batting coach. The PCB has appointed a three-member committee to invite applications from Pakistan and outside the country. But Abbas, who is also part of the committee, feels a local candidate should be hired for the role.
"I just feel that we should have a local person as batting coach because we have produced some great batsmen in our country and one of them can easily enough do the job for the national team," said the legendary batsman in an interview today.
Lancashire County Cricket Club on Friday signed a two-year contract with former England seamer Kabir Ali, in a bid to regain the Division status, which the Red Rose county lost this September.
"Lancashire has an exciting and emerging squad and I?m looking forward to playing my part in the challenges ahead," said the paceman after signing the deal.
Kabir Ali comes to Old Trafford after ending a three-year association with the Hampshire Royals. His stay at the Ageas Bowl was marred by a number of injuries, but this year he managed to play 19 matches across all formats. He ended the 2012 season on a high, helping the Royals clinch the CB40 Cup, by defending seven runs from the last over in the final against Warwickshire.
