According to a new rumour, Apple?s taking this vertical integration one step further by buying into a silicon fab to produce its own chips, further limiting a longstanding reliance upon top third-party suppliers (not to mention chief competitors) like Samsung.?This isn?t the first rumour of Apple buying a manufacturing plant.
The rumor comes via SemiAccurate:
Apple has just done something that?SemiAccurate has been expecting?for months and entered the fab industry. No we are not joking, Apple just bought into a fab, and not in a trivial way either.
According to a post from the folks at SemiAccurate, Apple has made a major investment in a computer chip manufacturing company, possibly Taiwan?s United Microelectronics Corporation. This is a significant first step toward producing its own computer chips, analysts suggest. If this report does turn out to be true, it will have some great long term benefits for Apple.
Longstanding rumors have pegged Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. as Apple?s most likely chipmaking partner. Just last month, The Wall Street Journal reported that after years of talks, Apple had finally inked a deal with TSMC to build mobile chips beginning in 2014. This development could deliver a monumental blow to Samsung Electronics? semiconductor division, which is presently the world?s third largest contract maker of chips.
