(AP) ? German lawmakers on Thursday overwhelmingly approved expanding the powers of the eurozone bailout fund, a major step toward tackling the sprawling debt crisis, in a vote that also helped strengthen Chancellor Angela Merkel's coalition government.

The measure had been largely expected to pass the lower house of parliament, but a lively debate ahead of the vote reflected how divided Germans remain over their role as Europe's economic power.

Of 611 lawmakers present, 523 voted in favor, while 85 voted against it. Only three lawmakers abstained, meaning that Germany in the future will be guaranteeing loans to the bailout fund, the so-called European Financial Stability Facility, or EFSF, of up to euro211 billion, rather than euro123 billion so far.

The vote had highlighted tensions in Merkel's center-right coalition that was strained by threats of dissent from many members who balked at the cost of propping up the eurozone's strugglers.

Opposition leaders had said going in that if Merkel's coalition has to rely on their votes, it would be a sign that her strife-prone and increasingly unpopular government is finished.

Yet after a night of intense lobbying, a majority of coalition members ? 315 ? voted in favor of the measure, enough to have ensured its passage even without opposition support.

"This shows the clear determination of the coalition on this issue," Rainer Bruederle, parliamentary leader of Merkel's junior partner, the Free Democrats, told n-tv broadcaster after the vote. "We have made an important decision for Europe."

Yet Frank Schaeffler, also of the Free Democrats, argued that bailout measures have worsened Greece's economic situation.

"Despite all arguments, the first bailout did not make the situation for Greece better, but worse," Schaeffler said. "Expanding the fund will make the situation even worse."

The lawmakers ? under close scrutiny from jittery markets ? were voting on European leaders' decision in July to increase the effective lending capacity of the fund to euro440 billion ($595 billion) and give it new powers, such as buying the bonds of shaky countries or lending money to governments before they get into a full-blown crisis.

Though Merkel described the euro ahead of the vote as "our common future" and said approving the beefed-up bailout fund was "of the very, very greatest significance," discussions went deep into the night Wednesday, in an attempt to win over dissenting members of her governing coalition.

On Wednesday, Finland voted in favor of expanding the fund's powers despite earlier threats to pull out of a rescue plan for Greece.

The fund expansion has to be ratified by all 17 eurozone nations to take force.

Germany's upper house of parliament is expected to pass the measure on Friday.

AUTOMOTIVE - VINTAGE: Microbuses Stall In Las Vegas

The Volkswagen microbuses were all lined up last week at Barrett-Jackson?s Las Vegas collector-car auction, emboldened by the stunning success of an impeccably restored 23-window Samba that reached more than $200,000 at the Orange County sale in June.

There were nine of them ? five window buses, one camper and three of the popular crew-cab pickups ? more than at any previous Barrett-Jackson auction, all reaching for the gold ring and a repeat of the OC sale.

But for whatever reason, the stars were not so aligned in Las Vegas. There were some stout prices, including the top sale of $73,700 for a 1962 23-window microbus and $72,600 for a 1963 21-window custom bus, both including auction fees, but nothing like the staggering price tag that put a VW microbus ahead of all the muscle cars, sports cars, classics and customs in Orange County.

A creatively customized 1966 VW double-cab with a canvas hooped cover, side ladder and a 2,100 cc performance engine sold for just $47,300. (Photo: Bob Golfen) The rest of the VW buses and pickups settled into the $40,000 range, with the camper going for the bargain price of $11,000, including fee.

So what happened? Has the bloom gone off the microbus rose so quickly?

?I don?t think there was ever that much of a bloom,? said Dave Kinney, a veteran auction analyst and appraiser. ?Sometimes, a couple of excited people are in the same room and boom, you have a big sale. But it?s not duplicable.?

VW buses have become a trendy collectors? item, similar to such quirky vehicles as Amphicars and BMW Isettas that saw such a run up in recent years. ?Every once in a while, people want something just because it?s the thing to buy,? Kinney said.

?There are a lot of them (microbuses) out there, and they can be restored with a reasonable amount of money,? he added. ?They?re certainly not rare, and exceptional ones have been available.?

The microbus prices have at this point settled at a lower level than the apparently unique sale in Orange County, but their average values also have risen considerably overall, Kinney said. This ?flavor-of-the-month? effect happens after a huge auction sale, after which the prices gradually settle to a more sustainable level.

?Exceptionally restored cars can excite people to pay more,? he said. ?Then they settle down to a price range that is usually higher than it was before.

?The microbuses will be at that level. Now we have to test the level and see where they end up.?

congratulations on early detection! According to Komen.org, the 5 year survival rate of people with early detection is 96%. Healthy eating, exercise, monitoring of other cysts and a good network of friends, family, and other survivors all play a role in helping you live a long and fruitful life.
The Susan G. Komen foundation has tons of information for you, and your local hospital might even have some support groups. Talk to your doctor about the side effects, there are sometimes other medications that can help you.

How Detox Centers Assist You with Drug Detox | Free Articles

Detox is one of the primary portions of the treatment process at the detox centres. It involves the specific attachment to drugs and alcohol. Detox programs use various strategies to prevail over the chemical addiction and condition the body for counseling and emotional treatments. It is the 1st part of any recovery program and is necessary for the best usefulness of other aspects such as therapy sessions and care after treatment. There are many ways in which these centres can aid you with the detoxification program.

Is There a Way to Get Out of Going to a Detox Center?

The approach of recuperating from substance abuse addiction is not a quick process. You may need to cope with many struggles to succeed in your goal. Most rehabilitation facilities gives you services to detox your system and take away all the impurities. This technique is termed detox, and the facilities which provide this program are known as detox centers. Without these centres, the whole process of recovery becomes moot. When somebody is at such a facility, toxins contained in the body are removed through a few ways. If they are not taken out altogether, cravings for the drug may resurface and the person will probably go back to the addiction stage.

A Detox Center May Be What You Need

All the therapy courses at the centers for detox are separated into 3 different types ? natural, medical and rapid detox.

The natural detox process utilizes natural solutions to strip away harmful toxins from your system. Only organic and homeopathic treatments are used in this type of treatment plan. The most popular herbs used are Foeniculum vulgare or fennel, and Taraxacum officinalis or dandelion. They are thought to be the most trusted way to purge your body. Along with the herbal treatments, a proper eating plan including veggies, fresh fruits, soup and fruit drinks are also included. When combined with working out and a lot of water, they are shown to be very effective in avoiding withdrawal symptoms.

Another process used by detox centers is medical detox. It is usually given for users who have other medical and mental problems. Natural detox may not be enough in such cases. Close supervising is necessary, and the patient may need prescription medications like Klonepin to minimize the withdrawal symptoms. Vital signs are checked regularly, and further emotional reinforcement is given. This kind of treatment solution will usually extend for 3 to seven days.

Rapid detox is yet another methodology used to remove toxins from the body. The individual is given standard anesthesia and medications are employed to complete the procedure swiftly. It can last from four to six hours and is viewed as a quick rehab technique. But, the individual will demand guidance and other guidance courses to finish the process of healing.

Noticeably, the detox centers will help you to select the best means of detoxification and reestablish safely.

Mexico City blind photographer share their world (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? Rodrigo Telon Yucute focuses on the sound of the voices, raises a camera and snaps off a shot, capturing an image of a couple laughing as they sit on a yellow park bench.

He shows it to the subjects, but cannot see it himself. The photographer-in-training has been blind for nearly 30 years.

"When I was young, I met a lot of people and it always caught my attention how they would take photographs to keep as mementos," Telon said. "I like to take photographs to capture a moment that I can later share with my family and friends so they can see what my life is like."

Telon was a 22-year-old guerrilla fighter in his home country of Guatemala when a land mine exploded beneath him, ripping apart his left forearm and destroying his eyesight.

After years of rehabilitation, he learned Braille and how to use a white cane to get around. Now 51, Telon is fulfilling his longtime wish of taking photographs.

He is one of 30 visually impaired or blind people learning photography with the help of the Mexico City foundation Ojos Que Sienten, or Eyes That Feel.

Founded five years ago by professional Mexican photographer Gina Badenoch, the foundation has been teaching the blind to express in photographs how they perceive the world. Her students use their hearing, touch, smell and taste to choose their subjects and create their images with the help of digital cameras.

The main purpose of the photography workshop is to teach blind people they can do things that would seem impossible, Badenoch said.

"It helps them feel part of society again. It helps them be seen and be heard again," she said.

For many of the new photographers, the most rewarding part is having their sighted friends describe the images.

"Being able to share something I made and hear people who are seeing your photograph describe what you created in your mind is something I enjoy tremendously," said Jose Manuel Pacheco Crispin, a 33-year-old university student who began losing his sight at the age of 16 because of a retinal degenerative disease.

Now a photography teacher at the foundation, Pacheco was part of the first group to take the workshop five years ago. After years of struggling to accept his new, sightless life, Pacheco said photography has empowered him and helped him to sharpen the senses he does have.

"It has helped me to break barriers and to keep having crazy ideas," said Pacheco, who recently climbed to the top of Iztaccihuatl, a 17,159-foot (5,230-meter) volcano near Mexico City. He and other visually impaired friends made the climb guided by Erik Weihenmayer, the first blind person to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 2001.

Photography doesn't come easy. Beginners often leave out the heads or legs of their subject, but with practice they learn to improve their images. In a sense, they're photographing the sounds they hear or the smells they sense.

The sun's warmth helps them know where to place themselves to photograph their subject. They may touch a flower to sense its shape before photographing it, or listen intently for the wind blowing through leaves to locate a tree.

They ask people they are photographing to talk to them so they can figure out how high or low on their body to place the camera. They then hold the camera against their foreheads or chests for stability.

"My hearing, my smell, all my senses are alert when I'm taking a photograph," said Jose Antonio Dominguez, who has taken scores of photos of his guide dog Boni, a 3-year-old golden retriever.

Dominguez, 49, first lost sight in his right eye when he was a teenager due to glaucoma. He has lost 95 percent of his vision on his left eye because of macular degeneration.

While talking at a Mexico City restaurant, Dominguez explained the information he was picking up from his hearing.

"To my right, the waitress dropped the knives first and then the forks," he said.

Each blind photographer has a project to work on for two months. Dominguez said he wants to photograph people who help him as he navigates the chaotic streets of Mexico City.

Telon, who lost his parents and two brothers during the civil war in Guatemala and has lived in Mexico since 1990, will focus part of his project on an 8-year-old girl who lost her arm and who refuses to wear her artificial limb.

"I want to tell her my story and how I got accustomed to using my artificial arm," Telon said.

He may also tell her about a daughter he saw for the last time 29 years ago, when she was 6 weeks old.

"When I left to join the guerrilla she was starting to smile," Telon said. "That's a photograph I keep in my mind."

50Plus : Arts & Entertainment : Top 5 favourite films at TIFF

Another TIFF has come and gone! Here are five films we loved this year.

For many film buffs, when the Toronto International Film Festival comes around each September, everything else stops. The city turns into a hub for celebrity spotting and premieres of films big and small. This year was no different, and although I didn?t see quite as many as I would have liked, there were a few that really stood out.

DRIVE

This film starring Canadian heartthrob Ryan Gosling has everything an Oscar worthy film should have ? great direction, nuanced writing, an entertaining yet plausible storyline, incredible performances from a stellar cast, slick editing and a soundtrack that elevates it to another level. The buzz around it is not just hype.

Gosling plays a young stunt driver in Hollywood, who, after falling for his neighbor, agrees to help her ex-con husband with a robbery that will supposedly clear him of his debt to past associates who threatened his family. When the robbery doesn?t go off as planned he is left holding the bag of dirty money.

Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn won the Best Director Award at Cannes, and after seeing the film I completely understand why. Action films are rarely elevated to a place where they can be called art, but Drive proves it can be done.

PAUL WILLIAMS STILL ALIVE

Documentaries were a big part of the festival this year, considering opening night began with one. I had not planned on seeing Paul Williams Still Alive ? but when I ended up with tickets I decided to give it a chance, and am so glad I did.

Filmmaker Stephen Kessler opens the documentary explaining his childhood love for songwriter Paul Williams ? who wrote hit songs such as ?We?ve Only Just Begun? and ?An Old Fashioned Love Song?- and how this short, entertaining singer made him feel like he belonged as a kid. He had always thought Paul died too young, until one day he googled him and realized he was still alive, thus beginning his journey to find out what happened to his childhood idol.

Throughout the film we see Kessler trying to find out why Paul basically disappeared after the 1980s when he struggled with addiction. And it is fascinating to see how much happier and at peace Paul is now ? he plays small club shows ? than he was when he was a staple on the Johnny Carson show surrounded by yes men. The fame and money didn?t bring him happiness, but as he sees it, made him lonelier, selfish, and more interested in attention than making music. Without it, he is a good husband and father, he is sober, and he?s still making his living playing music.

The film brilliantly debunks the rock star myth of it being better to burn out at the height of your fame than to fade away into obscurity.

Fast Cash Personal Loans - The Difference Between Personal ...

A payday loan is like a personal loan, but has some important differences.

Installment Loans - An installment loan is one where you receive the loan amount in one lump sum and then make regular, set payments until the loan is paid off.

Revolving Credit - A credit card is different than an installment loan because you can borrow less than your approved amount at first and then more later. Also, you always have the option to borrow more money as long as there is room available in your credit line. A credit card is considered a revolving line of credit.

Payday loans are neither installment or revolving loans. A payday loan is one that is paid off in one lump sum. Payday loans are fast cash. With a payday loan, the approval process is quick and easy. But, the loan is more like an installment loan, not a revolving line of credit.

Payday loans are usually for amounts from $500 - $1000 and personal loans are usually for amounts of $1000 - $10,000.

Payday Loans are Fast Cash - Personal Loans are Long Term - With personal loans, you usually do not receive the cash fast, you usually have to go through a normal loan process, which can take anywhere from 1-2 weeks or more until you actually receive your loan amount. The loan payments are extended for 1-5 years. With a payday loan, the entire loan amount is due within 1-4 weeks.

Understand your cash needs to determine whether you need a fast cash payday loan or a personal loan.

Britain to recall James Murdoch in hacking probe (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? British politicians, struggling in their bid to find out who knew what about phone hacking at a Rupert Murdoch tabloid, will recall son James for further questioning after employees contradicted his repeated claims of innocence.

James Murdoch, chairman of News Corp's British newspaper arm, spent almost three, uncomfortable hours in front of a parliamentary committee with his father in July, answering questions over what they had done to unravel the scandal at the News of the World.

But James's testimony, and his insistence that he did not know the problem stretched beyond 'one rogue reporter' until earlier this year, has since been undermined by two senior employees who say they made him aware of a wider problem in 2008.

Tom Watson, the most dogged member of the committee to pursue the case, told Reuters they would first want to speak to Les Hinton, the most senior News Corp executive to stand down over the scandal, several lawyers and then James Murdoch.

"We're inviting him back," he said. "We feel we should hear from Les Hinton and a couple of the lawyers before James Murdoch, so realistically we are talking about November."

News Corp has been engulfed by the scandal since July when it was revealed that the phone hacking extended beyond celebrities and politicians to murder victims including schoolgirl Milly Dowler, and British war dead.

The crisis has already wiped billions of dollars off News Corp's market value, cost it two senior executives, forced it to drop a $12 billion bid for BSkyB and to shut down the 168-year-old News of the World tabloid.

James Murdoch, News Corp's deputy chief operating officer, has seen his chances of succeeding his father and founder of the media empire, Rupert, recede.

News International, the British newspaper arm of News Corp, said it was still to hear from the committee, but said James Murdoch would be happy to appear in front of members again to answer any further questions.

At the center of the dispute is a claim by the former editor of the News of the World and the head lawyer that they showed an email in 2008 to James Murdoch, which indicated that other journalists were involved in the practice.

Murdoch has repeatedly denied this, saying the two men did not show or mention the email in a brief meeting.

The cross-party committee will also have many questions for Hinton, the debonair former top Murdoch executive who was forced to stand down in July after he became a target for criticism over phone hacking in the United States.

Hinton ran the British newspaper arm when much of the hacking was alleged to have occurred, and then went on to run Dow Jones in the U.S..

The questioning is likely to be very precise. The committee has appeared at times exasperated in its bid to find out who authorized the phone hacking after it became clear that it was happening on an almost industrial scale to secure stories.

Members have interviewed a host of senior News Corp executives, lawyers and former editors, appearing incredulous at times as witnesses have denied all knowledge of the hacking and pleaded that they cannot remember who said or did what when.

The former lawyer Tom Crone and editor Colin Myler often said that the committee would 'have to ask Les Hinton about that', when they appeared before the committee a week ago.

Introducing #SciAmBlogs bloggers: Jennifer Frazer

Every week I post a quick Q&A with one of our bloggers on the network, so you can get to know them better. This week, I chat with Jennifer Frazer of The Artful Amoeba blog.

Hello! Let?s start with first things first. What is the name of your blog and why did you choose that name ? what does it mean?

My blog is called The Artful Amoeba. I chose it because I wanted something that expressed how complex, beautiful and surprising life on Earth can be. In particular, the title refers to organisms called slime molds that are essentially intelligent giant amoebae. Artful is meant to convey that they are both beautiful and clever ? which they are.

Where does the artwork for your banner come from, and what are you trying to convey with it?

The art was my idea, although the legwork (er. . . mousework?) was done by my friend and graphic artist Brannan McGill, owner of the coincidentally-named Protist Design. I was searching Wikipedia one day looking for images of amoebae for my very first blog post and stumbled on an old educational diagram of an amoeba where it looked like the labels had actually been pasted on now-yellowed paper. I loved the vintage look, and it occurred to me it would be fun to spice it up a bit. There?s been a joke around for a long time that slime molds are trying to take over the world. David St. Hubbins goes on a huge rant about this in one of the deleted scenes from ?This is Spinal Tap?. And then one day when I was in the forest with a college friend and we stumbled on a slime mold that had crawled up a sapling, and after I explained how slime molds worked, he quipped, ?Today this Leaf, tomorrow the world!? which I loved. So I thought it would be fun to show the amoeba had some plans for world domination a proxy for the fact that obscure, small organisms like slime molds can be astoundingly complex and intelligent for their apparent station in life. It was also a way of letting readers know my blog approaches its subject with a definite sense of humor.

Tell us more about yourself ? where are you from, how did you get into science?

I?ve lived in pretty much in every region of the United States except the West Coast, though I completed all of my middle and high schoool education in a suburb of Kansas City called Shawnee. I thought about a lot of careers growing up ? astronaut and singer were the first two ? before cycling through law and engineering and finally hitting on biology late in high school. That stuck. The more I learn, the more I love it, even 15 years later. I think it?s the intersection of beauty, form, and function that I find so compelling. Living creatures are amazing little machines with fascinating stories I love to tell, but they?re also beautiful. That is why my blog is also a very visual blog, with big, high-quality art.

How did you get into science blogging and science writing? What were the early influences on you regarding your blogging style and topics

I studied biology in college, and had a bit of a crisis when I realized that I did not want to be a scientist. On the other hand, I didn?t want to be a doctor, dentist, high school teacher, or pharmaceutical salesperson either. Now what? I still loved biology, and I knew there were so many fascinating and beautiful organisms I had discovered in school that I wanted to share with the world. I liked making things, and I had a short attention span that did not suit itself well to three-year research projects. So I needed something that would provide constant variety and learning, let me share what I had learned with others, and create useful things on a relatively-short time scale. Science writing seemed to fit the bill, though I knew it would be hard to break in and make a living off of it.

The blogging thing actually grew out of a long-time dream to write a book. After I won an AAAS Science Journalism Award in 2007, I was in Boston visiting my old science writing program at MIT. I mentioned the book and my frustration at not being able to start it due to having a day job, and our director suggested starting a blog as a way of getting started. The bite-sized aspect of blogging was appealing to me, as well as the complete control over content and the chance to show and tell the world about all the things I?d always wanted to. Especially alluring was the ability to start doing it right away ? no finding an agent; no writing a proposal. The technical side of getting started scared me, as did being able to find photos to use since I knew from the beginning that would be important. But if having everything figured out in advance was a prerequisite to getting started, nothing important would ever get done.

When I started blogging, I read a book at the recommendation of someone in my local blogger meet-up called ?Problogger?. That taught me the basics of how to write for a blog. My style was just my personal style ? when you read a post, you?re hearing my voice. It?s fairly opinionated, and that probably comes across. : ) My style is also heavily influenced by my many years of Mystery Science Theater 3000 ? and later Rifftrax ? viewing. ?Wait Wait . . . Don?t Tell Me!? has been influencing me lately too. I just love that stuff, and I have kind of applied that riffing style to my writing. My hope is that humor helps make the science more approachable and enjoyable for everyone.

The topics I chose were the things I was passionate about but that I thought were not getting covered enough or at all in the press or in the blogosphere. These were often ?charasmatic microfauna?, as I like to put it (as opposed to charasmatic megafauna, which you can read about here), although I still blog about big stuff like pine trees or larches (plants in general get no respect but conifers really have it bad) and backboned stuff like chimeras or thread snakes too. I see my niche as neglected organisms. As much as I love David Attenborough (and i love him a lot), his ?Life? series should really be called ?Vertebrates, insects, a smattering of higher plants, and a few sexy sea creatures?. What about lichens? Protists? Algae? Bacteria? Archaea? Fungi? And the millions of invertebrates besides insects?

What is your blog about? Who is your target audience, and why do you think people should read your blog?

My blog is about making biodiversity and natural history fun. It?s about telling the story of life on Earth over time, and, as just mentioned, of creatures whose stories never get told, or never get told in compelling ways: interesting, odd, extinct, and small stuff, but also occasionally some big and overlooked stuff. So by biodiversity I mean the organisms themselves, not the vague concept of species richness. My target audience is the general public, but also middle and high school students, and hopefully even a few bright younger kids. I?m shooting for the crowd that enjoyed Gary Larson?s ?There?s a Hair in My Dirt?, which entertained and delighted both kids and guys with Ph.D.s in biology alike. At the same time, I inject as much actual science as possible. I want content, not fluff, in my posts. But entertaining, clear content. I want you to learn something while having fun.

Anything else interesting about you, perhaps cool hobbies?

I?m tremendously interested in history ? especially ancient history and mythology ? and that occasionally shows up in posts. I am also a mushroom hunter, a caver, and a certified diver. The diving thing got started ? even though I live in Colorado ? when I realized that what was hiking was to land life, diving was to aquatic life. The proximal reason was so I could do a tremendously terrifying dive in Hawaii where I planned to jump into a section of 5,000-feet deep Pacific Ocean at night of my own free will. The dive was called ?Pelagic Magic? and the idea was to see the interesting deep-sea animals that makes a nightly trip to the surface to feed: delightfully odd things like box jellyfish, salps and heteropods. As soon as I read about it, I knew it was meant for me and I HAD to do it, but it?s hard for me to describe the sheer terror I experienced in the preparation for the dive. I would have trouble falling asleep at night thinking about it.

It wasn?t the diving that scared me ? I love that and technically speaking it was easy. It was the ambient conditions. I was to be tethered by a 40-foot line to the boat, but the knowledge that the bottom would be nearly a mile away could be, shall we say, distressing. In addition, a curious marlin (fish with a dagger welded to its face) or testy blue shark could have shown up at any moment. Recently, there had also been the first-ever documented cookie-cutter shark attack on a swimmer between Hawaii and Maui ? in the waters exactly where I would be. Cookiecutters specialize in sneaking up on prey at night and taking biscuit-shaped chunks out of their flesh. I also could have been whacked, and subsequently inked, by a speeding squid. Basically, we would be jumping in and ringing the dinner bell by turning on lights that would attract krill at the base of the food chain, and it would only be a matter of time before the rest of the food chain showed up if it happened to be in the neighborhood.

Fortunately, there were no dangerous encounters that night, and the closest I came was seeing the herd of squid flash by in the distance and swimming out of the way of what I recognized to be a box jelly. I ended up having one of the most fantastic experiences of my life. I wrote about ? and posted some photos ? of the whole experience here and here.

On a not-unrelated-note, one of my biggest dreams is to visit the deep sea in a submersible. If anyone knows how to make that happen (or your name is Sir Richard Branson), please do get in touch.

#Amwriting (dot org) - Why I'm Not Writing As Much As I Should

I haven?t been writing as much lately, though I am working on a book. It?s an interesting project, and one I think my friends in the #amwriting community might be interested in.

I live in the vibrant town of West Chester, Pennsylvania. We are situated in the center of Chester County, a beautiful historic region with rolling hills and horse farms. Fox hunting, cycling and canoeing down the Brandywine are some of the most popular pursuits. We are also home to art and entertainment personalities as diverse as Andrew Wyeth, Bam Margera, Longwood Gardens and the electronic retailer QVC.

Over the past few years, a community of writers has formed around critique groups and our local story slam. So in January of 2011, I made a list of local fiction writers I?ve come to know and admire. These writers all share a passion for crafting short stories. Some of the writers I?ve worked with professionally over the years, others I?ve met through the local groups and Twitter. Each writer is someone seriously pursuing the craft, though we all have different genres and styles.?After making this list I reached out to each writer and asked if they would contribute a story for a collection called Chester County Fiction. I was thrilled when everyone said ?yes!?

Two other friends who are professional editors agreed to edit each story and draw out the author?s voice. For the cover, graphic designer Larry Geiger offered to create one of his unique designs. As we sat at Iron Hill Brewery discussing the project, Larry deemed we needed a photographer and David James soon joined the collaborative effort.

This is not a collection as much as it is a sampler of the writers living and working in our community. Most of the stories are set in Chester County. All of the stories are solid examples of local writers who are hard at work defining their own voice over the course of a lifetime.

Short stories were all? turned in by June 30th. We edited and returned the stories to authors. Second and third drafts were passed back and forth. Round one of proofing has been done with round two commencing this week. We are in the final sprint.

After our book launch, we will hold a few events in our awesome local independent bookstores and art galleries. After six months, we?ll count out the money earned and the collaborative team will vote on what we should do with the profits. We may throw a party or donate the money to a local literacy campaign. If we?re lucky, we?ll have enough to do both! But we?re not doing this for the money.

Courtesy of Baldwin's Book Barn

The book launch for Chester County Fiction will be held on October 2nd, from 2p.m. to 5p.m. at Baldwin?s Book Barn. Baldwin?s Book Barn is an iconic Chester County landmark and possibly the best used book store in the country.

YOU are cordially invited!

My question is: Is there a local book movement in your area?

Government Jobs and Debt Choking Small Business into Extinction (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | The government is slowly swallowing up small businesses with their growing reach. Job creation is a key to kick-starting this economy but creating government jobs will kill small businesses across the country. President Barack Obama is talking to the public about creating new jobs for small business but his actions and intentions will eventually destroy the entrepreneurial spirit in the United States.

President Obama is once again focusing on those entities and organizations that helped him get elected in 2008 and will help him in 2012 as well. The American Jobs Act is actually the American Union Building Act.

Obama states in his speech, posted on the White House website, "The purpose of the American Jobs Act is simple: to put more people back to work and more money in the pockets of those who are working. It will create more jobs for construction workers, more jobs for teachers, more jobs for veterans, and more jobs for long-term unemployed."

It would be more appropriate for Obama to speak the truth. The purpose of the American Jobs Act is simple: to put more union people back to work and more money in union coffers so Obama can win re-election.

If Obama wishes to make his statement true he will assure the public there will be an open bidding process on all new roads projects and school rebuilding projects. Assure the public union workers will not be required on these projects and small businesses will make up more than 75 percent of the work force on these new jobs projects.

This will never happen for one simple reason, this is not a jobs bill. This is an effort to build loyalty to President Obama for the 2012 presidential election. Reaction to the speech has been tepid at best and despite Obama's impassioned speech, the only support he is receiving is from union heads and staunchly Democratic companies.

If the current administration is serious about creating jobs and building up small business they will rework this bill. Obama can focus on building small business and making laws easier to start a small business. This will never happen with this president. He has no interest in small businesses and entrepreneurs starting up new companies.

For Israelis, terrorism is part of life

By Paul Goldman , NBC News Producer

TEL AVIV ? Ten years ago Americans woke up to a new reality and discovered that terror can hit within.

Here in Israel that same reality is a way of life. People here grow up living and hearing about bomb explosions, suicide bombers and terrorists trying to infiltrate the country.

It was just about three weeks ago that terrorists crossed the Egyptian border with Israel near the vacation town of Eilat. They killed eight Israeli civilians, including a couple who were driving their car and were shot at close range. A small al-Qaida- linked group based in Gaza praised the attack saying the attack sends a message against ?the enemies of God.?

It's this reality that caused lots of Israelis to be very happy when they heard that the U.S. killed Bin Laden.

Hai Shaulian is a 44-year-old Israeli who works in real estate. ?I feel now that the world is a safer place for my children. The U.S has woken up against the bad people out there.?

When you speak with people on the streets of Tel Aviv, it?s clear that they have become accustomed to living with the constant threat of attack.?

?Here in Israel we had a lot of terror before 9/11, so we have experience with it,? said Adiv Cohen, a 28-year-old architect. ?People in the world can now understand what we go through and feel.?

Tomer Helsgoff, a 29-year-old graphic designer, believes that the attack made people more aware of potential danger.

?I think that now people around the world are much more afraid and suspicious. For me as an ex-Israeli soldier we feel the danger in the air,? said Helsgoff. He added that people always need to be cautious of their surroundings. ?You need to always be ready that something will go off, that something will happen. You live under terror all your life.??

Yael Yosefi, is an 18-year-old who will be joining the Israeli Army soon. For him, the attacks are a constant reminder that the world is full of dangers. ?People realize now that the world is a frightening place, I?m scared to be on buses and on the street.?

But in a strange way, the 9/11 attack seemed to strengthen even further the bond between Israelis and Americans.

?We feel very connected with America, we think that anything that happens in the U.S has an effect on us and vice versa,? said Yosefi.

?I think America showed the world that there are still rules. If you strike us we strike harder and that is what Israel tries to do,? said Helsgoff.

Hands-on with the Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman

SE Live with Walkman

The Walkman brand might not be as synonymous with portable music as it once was, but it's continued to live on in Sony Ericsson's Walkman line of phones. In the past, these have typically been mid-to-low-end devices as opposed to anything with true smartphone functionality. That changes with the launch of the Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman, though, which is the first Android-powered Walkman device. Despite its budget leanings, the Live is no slouch, with a 1GHz second-gen Snapdragon and Android 2.3.4 on-board.

We got an early look at the Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman at the Xperia Party in London last night, and you can check out our first video walkthrough of the device after the jump.

Dead NASA satellite will soon plummet to Earth

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A dead NASA satellite will soon fall to Earth, but the space agency says there is very little chance that a piece of it will hit someone.

NASA says the 20-year-old satellite will probably fall sometime between late September and October. Pieces of it could land anywhere in the six inhabited continents in a worldwide swath from south of Juneau, Alaska, to just north of the tip of South America. NASA scientists estimate a 1-in-3,200 chance a satellite part could hit someone. Most of it will burn up after entering Earth's atmosphere.

The 6-ton (5.4-metric ton) Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) ran out of fuel in 2005 and will fall uncontrolled out of orbit. Only about 1,200 pounds (544.32 kilograms) of metal should survive, NASA said.

This satellite is far smaller than the 135-ton (123-metric ton) Russian space station Mir, which fell to Earth in 2001 or the 100-ton (91-metric ton) Skylab that fell in 1979. Mir fell into the South Pacific, while Skylab hit the Indian Ocean and parts of sparsely populated western Australia. Because two-thirds of the Earth is ocean, space debris usually hits water

"Things have been re-entering ever since the dawn of the Space Age; to date nobody has been injured by anything that's re-entered," said NASA orbital debris chief Gene Stansbery. "That doesn't mean we're not concerned."

NASA now has a rule that the chance of any of its satellites hitting someone has to be more than 1 in 10,000. But UARS, which measured chemicals in the air, was launched in 1991 before that rule was adopted. The agency usually tries to put dead satellites into "a graveyard orbit" or steer them down to the ocean, Stansbery said. But there was not enough fuel in this one to fire engines that would move it to a higher orbit or steer it down safely.

The 1-in-3,200 odds of being hit pertain to any of the nearly 7 billion people on Earth. But any one individual's odds of being struck are about 1 in 21 trillion.

Space debris bigger than 5 tons (4.5 metric tons) does not often fall to Earth. But this will be the third time this year for something that big to reach Earth, according to Jonathan McDowell, a Harvard University astrophysicist who tracks objects in orbit.

The UARS satellite travels over a large band of Earth, avoiding only areas close to the poles. NASA calculates that when the satellite does fall it will scatter pieces over a 500-mile (800-kilometer)-wide region.

Stansbery said the agency doesn't know exactly when and where those will fall because it depends on the orientation of the satellite in the atmosphere, solar storm activity and other variables.

There probably is no hazardous material left in the falling pieces, but people should not touch any fallen satellite parts just in case, he said.

NASA will be tracking the satellite on a weekly and later daily basis until it falls.
