CHARLOTTE, N.C. ? Some Democrats say their party should proudly promote its record on clean energy, despite Republican attacks.
?We want this debate. We think it?s going to be a debate that wins,? Rep. Ed Markey said Wednesday afternoon during an ?Energy and the Presidency? panel discussion hosted by POLITICO.

He added that a focus on clean energy will pay off big with white suburban voters.
Markey?s comments are the latest indication that Democrats may see energy as a winning issue, even as Republicans continue to attack the president over his investments in renewable energy companies such as the failed solar manufacturer Solyndra.
One possible nod in that direction was a decision by organizers of the Democratic National Convention to invite venture capitalist and Obama bundler Steve Westly to speak Wednesday night, despite his role in GOP attack ads tying Energy Department aid decisions to companies backed by his firm, the Westly Group. Westly has also turned up in emails from 2010 in which he tried to warn the White House about Obama?s upcoming visit to Solyndra?s headquarters.
The Obama campaign and a spokeswoman for the convention have offered no explanation for why they invited Westly. But it?s a risky choice for Democrats.
A Westly spokesman told POLITICO that the speech will focus on ?job creation and entrepreneurship,? but he declined to comment on Republican criticism of his boss.
The RNC pounced on news that Westly is speaking at the convention.
?Maybe the president should put as much effort into taking care of the taxpayers as he does his donors and political cronies like Steve Westly,? RNC spokeswoman Kirsten Kukowski said in an email.
The RNC also flagged a Tuesday ABC News story reporting that Steven Spinner, an Obama fundraiser and former DOE adviser who had pushed to speed up approval of the Solyndra loan guarantee, is at the convention. ABC caught Spinner taking a tour of the convention floor with other VIP Obama fundraisers.
