New Benghazi report bolsters CIA account

Intelligence officials have disclosed a new detailed timeline of the attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, acknowledging the CIA played a greater role in responding to the attack than has previously been disclosed. A senior U.S. intelligence official also insisted that the CIA security team that initially responded to the attack was not given orders "to stand down in providing support," as had been suggested in media reports.

The timeline provided by a senior U.S. intelligence official gives the first precise account of how CIA security teams provided the first response to the Sept. 11 attack on the diplomatic mission in Benghazi, which killed four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens.

The attack has become a political hot potato in the presidential campaign, with conservatives accusing the administration of not being transparent. The State Department has previously released a detailed account of the night's events, but did not acknowledge a CIA role in the response. The timeline given by a senior Intelligence official confirms that the facility previously described by the State Department as an annex, was in fact, a facility housing CIA security officers. It does not provide any additional details on the current intelligence assessment that the attack was an opportunistic result of earlier protests that day outside the U.S. embassy in Cairo over an anti-Muslim movie.

The official says there was "no second guessing" of those on the ground in Libya by senior officials either in Libya or Washington.

"There were no orders to anybody to stand down in providing support," said the official. The official's comments appeared to be a direct rebuttal of a Fox News report that CIA teams on the ground had been told by superior officers to "stand down" from providing security support to the consulate.

According to the official, upon learning of the attack at the consulate, the security team at the annex responded "as quickly and effectively as possible." The official described how the security team tried to rally additional support from local Libyan forces and heavier weapons, but that when that could not be accomplished "within minutes" they moved out to the compound. The official called the security team "genuine heroes" who risked their lives to save those at the compound.

According to the new timeline the annex received a call at 9:40 p.m. local time that the consulate was coming under attack. A team of six CIA security operatives left the annex for the mission within 25 minutes of that call.

Over the next 25 minutes the security team approached the compound and attempted to secure heavy weapons. They encountered heavy enemy fire when they entered the consulate compound to locate Stevens and the other Americans who were there at the time of the attack.

At 11:11 p.m., an unarmed U.S. military surveillance drone arrived over the compound. U.S. officials have told ABC News that the drone had been redirected to Benghazi from an ongoing mission elsewhere in Libya.

By 11:30pm, all of the Americans, with the exception of the missing Stevens, had left the compound in vehicles that immediately came under fire.

The annex itself came under sporadic small arms and RPG fire for the next 90 minutes before the attackers eventually dispersed.

At around 1 a.m. an additional CIA team of about six security officers from the embassy in Tripoli had arrived at Benghazi. U.S. officials have acknowledged that the embassy in Tripoli had chartered an aircraft to take the team to Benghazi. The official disclosed the new detail that two U.S. military officers were part of the team that flew in from Tripoli.

Upon learning that the situation at the annex had calmed down, the team that came in from Tripoli initially wanted to focus their attention on locating Stevens, who had been taken to a local hospital.

When the team finally managed to secure transportation and an armed escort into Benghazi, they learned that Stevens "was almost certainly dead and that the security situation at the hospital was uncertain." At that point they headed to the annex to help evacuate the Americans located there .

They arrived at the annex at 5:15 a.m., just before mortar rounds begin to hit the complex. The attack killed two security officers, Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods, who were located on the annex's roof. Doherty had been part of the security team that had flown in from Tripoli. The new attack on the annex lasted only 11 minutes.

Less than an hour later everyone at the annex was evacuated with the help of "a heavily armed Libyan military unit. "

Five Reasons Small Business Takes Center Stage In 2012 ...

smallbusinesscenterstageConduct a simple Google News search and compare results for ?Small Business 2012 Presidential Election? with the same search for 2008.? You?ll discover data that confirm what you already know: Small business and small business issues are exponentially more prevalent in this presidential contest than they were in 2008.?? In fact, it?s hard for me to recall a time, certainly in my lifetime, when small business has been more center stage or when small business issues and America?s issues were as inextricably aligned as they have been throughout this election season.

Small business issues are America?s issues, and the shift we have been witnessing during this election season will likely be with us for many elections to come.? Here are five reasons why:

  1. Small Business/Big Impact ? With roughly 28 million U.S. small business owners, who lead companies responsible for hiring nearly three out of every four new employees, America and small business are conjoined.?? Factor in the families, employees and communities directly affected by small business and it?s a powerful extended constituency.
  2. Small business owners vote ? In a survey conducted by the NSBA, 97% of small business owners say they regularly vote in national elections and nearly 70% contribute to political campaigns.? Compare that to presidential election voter turnout that hasn?t eclipsed 60% since the 1960s.? Small business owners have a big voice and a big vote.
  3. Small business CEOs are pragmatists not ideologues - Time and time again, in our Vistage CEO Confidence Index surveys, which we?ve been conducting for more than a decade, these CEOs have demonstrated repeatedly that they do not vote a straight party ticket.? ?These business owners and leaders support solutions and ideas more than they line up behinds parties or specific candidates.? Party affiliations tend to mean much less among this group and do not typically reflect whom they will support or who they believe will prevail in the election.?? Understanding this, candidates believe they can get a fair hearing by this group, and will spend the time and the money to prove their solutions are best for the country.
  4. They are aligned in their belief Washington is broken.? In the Q1 2012 Vistage CEO Confidence Index, 99% Vistage members stated there was a lack of leadership in Washington, blaming the President, the Congress and both political parties for the gridlock that was plaguing the country.? Small businesses owners will likely take the political capital they?ve earned, regardless of who wins the election, to get Washington working again ? only further increasing its influence.
  5. Small business will drive our nation?s agenda into the foreseeable future.?? In the October 2012 WSJ/Vistage Small Business CEO Survey, CEOs leading companies of $1 million to $20 million in annual revenue, a subset of our Vistage membership, were asked to identify the most important issues in this presidential election based on the gap in the stated approaches of each candidate.??? By far, healthcare reform and how each candidate will direct the economy were the biggest issues.? ?Whether they are talked about in the context of small business or not, it?s clear that these are the wedge issues for all Americans in this presidential campaign.

Today, small business is the undisputed backbone of this country and, in the coming years, America will stand taller because of it.? The values, work ethic, and innovative spirit that have built this nation, are personified in its leaders and employees.?? Regardless of who prevails in the upcoming election, small business leaders will be there to assure that America wins.

Relationship between girlfriend and her ex

It's been over two years since I've visited this site. This site was very helpful while being separated and going through my divorce. Fast forward to now. I've been officially divorced for almost two years. While separated, I started talking to a girl that contacted me on Facebook basically because she liked my picture. We learned a lot about each other over e-mail and got together a few times. We were friends for about year before we actually started dating. She didn't want to get involved until my divorce was final.

I have two kids from my marriage. She has one with her ex-fiance. In both cases, our exes wanted out of the relationship because they had "side relationships" going on. We have now been dating for almost a year-and-a-half. Things are good. She has opened my eyes to living life. I look at my marriage and I feel I was living a sheltered life compared to what I'm doing now. It feels great. We have our discussions and an occasional argument but I feel they are healthy. In my marriage, things got bottled up and we wouldn't talk. I think that's part of what led to the split.

Now for the main point: My ex and I have a good working relationship when it comes to the kids. We share custody and are cordial to each other. I don't talk to her much on a personal level but I'm comfortable interacting with her. She is still with the guy from the side relationship. She has never brought him around me but she has met my girlfriend.

My girlfriend and her ex have a different relationship. And I want to know if I'm wrong for feeling like it's too close of a relationship. They chat often. It's usually about their daughter but they do share personal stories with each other...sometimes things that I don't know about her. Last Christmas, I was with her family and her ex had dropped off gifts for everyone. Her mom almost made it a show to make it known that "Ex" had brought gifts. It made me feel small.

Occasionally when my girlfriend has to go to work early, her ex will come over to her place and watch TV until their daughter wakes up so he can take her with him (as opposed to taking her the night before). She pretty much has full custody but he takes their daughter when she works. He brings her coffee sometimes.

I feel like her family is still more connected to him than me. The ex takes my girlfriend's brother places sometimes. He's in the media and has access to things I never would.

On Thanksgiving, they do a walk together with their daughter. Last year was supposed to be the last year they did it together. This year, she asked me to do it but said he would be going too. I respectfully declined telling her that's their tradition.

Last night, I went trick-or-treating with my kids and their mom. She went with her daughter and her ex. I called her to see what time she wanted to get together (her ex was taking their daughter with him afterwards). She said she was going to her brother's. Her ex was going along. So she told me to come to her house later. I said I could meet her anywhere (thinking she would invite me to her brother's) but she just said to go to her house later.

This weekend is her daughter's birthday party. She invited me and my kids along and her ex will be there. I'm comfortable going.

These are just some examples. My girlfriend and her ex seem to be very "chummy" together. They also talk about their relationships with each other. He just broke up with his girlfriend.

I have no reason to believe anything physical is going on. Since she and I both went through the same thing when we split up with our exes, I feel that she feels the same was as I do about infidelity. Should I be worried about how much they interact though or am I just being the jealous boyfriend?

Apple rewrites its apology to Samsung, now appearing in UK newspapers

Apple rewrites its apology to Samsung, now appearing in UK newspapersApple has rewritten its apology to Samsung following its previous version which was labelled as ?non-compliant? by the court that made the initial ruling. Apple was told by Lord Justice Longmore, Lord Justice Kitchin and Sir Robin Jacob that it had to change the wording of the statement and that it should be carried on its home page with at least an 11-point font. The new statement is now appearing in UK newspapers but has not yet appeared on Apple.com. The news comes from The Next web.

When Apple placed the apology on its website on October 26, it ran part of the order but also included references in its UK lawsuits that Samsung products were ?not as cool? as its iPad and iPhone devices. The link to the apology was also tucked away in a hard to view section of its website. Apple representatives apparently told the court that it would take up to 14 days to change the statement, but one of the judges refused to believe it.

So 24-hours later, Apple has published the necessary apology in UK newspapers but it remains to be seen how long it will take to update on its website. Currently the original unsatisfactory statement has been removed so we would expect the revised statement to appear sooner rather than later.

London mayor slams "inertia" over calls for airport growth

LONDON (Reuters) - London's mayor accused the government on Friday of "utter inertia" on airport expansion policy with pressure growing for a launch of major infrastructure projects to help shore up the floundering economy.

Airport capacity is a divisive issue in Britain, pitting popular London Mayor Boris Johnson against Prime Minister David Cameron at a time when the British leader is facing a damaging rebellion from inside his own ruling Conservative party.

Cameron's government is facing increasing demands for an acceleration of infrastructure projects as it seeks to breathe new life into the economy.

Business leaders say more airport capacity is crucial to boosting trade and routes to developing markets as competition heats up from more attractive hubs in continental Europe.

Johnson, a Conservative tipped in some quarters as a possible future prime minister, said the government was dragging its feet over aviation and losing momentum against other more aggressive market players.

"It is a policy of utter inertia," Johnson told BBC Radio. "Can I tell you in the next nine years how many runways they are going to build in China? They are going to build 52. How many are we going to build in the UK? None at all."

He said an inquiry on the aviation sector's future, launched on Friday and due to report after the next general election in 2015, was taking too much time.

"I think what is going on now is a good thing, it's a productive process. I just think it could be speeded up, and there is absolutely no need to delay to 2015."

Heathrow is the world's third-busiest airport but it is close to full capacity. The government needs to decide whether to expand its existing facilities or consider other options.

The Conservative-led coalition blocked construction of a third runway there after it came to power in 2010. The idea of another runway had been unpopular with local voters and green groups as it would have meant a huge increase in the number of planes flying over London and its densely populated suburbs.

But speculation has been growing that Cameron could still go back to the plan if he wins the 2015 election.

Riding a wave of popularity following London's widely praised Olympic Games, Johnson is campaigning for a brand-new new airport in the Thames Estuary - a lavish project widely known as "Boris Island".

He has demanded Cameron rule out the Heathrow third runway option both during the current parliament and beyond, a call echoed by other Conservatives in areas under its flight path.

The aviation inquiry, chaired by former Financial Services Authority head Howard Davies, says it would review all expansion options fairly and come up with an interim report next year.

Options on the table include expanding existing airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted, connecting London by high speed rail to an airport in the city of Birmingham as well as building Boris Island.

Davies denied his mission was part of a government ploy to kick the tricky question "into the long grass" for political reasons.

"Some of the criticism assumes that we will go into a huddle for a couple of years and then come out with 'X solution'. It's not going to be like that," he told reporters.

"I do take the view, perhaps a naive view, that political opinions do to some extent reflect the fact that there are difficult choices here."
