'Extreme Universe' map gets update

The Fermi space telescope has updated its catalogue of the Universe's most violent neighbourhoods.

Fermi catches gamma rays, the most energetic light, spewing from nature's most extreme physical processes.

The new catalogue, posted on the Arxiv server, lists the sources of the highest-energy gamma rays that Fermi has yet seen: 514 of them.

Some 65 of them are "unassociated" sources that may turn out to be completely new astronomical objects.

The catalogue is to be published in the Astrophysical Journal.

It will help outline which of the known sources of other kinds of electromagnetic radiation - such as visible light, or radio waves, or X-rays - are also emitting at this higher range of gamma-ray energies.

That will help astrophysicists unpick exactly what is happening in these violent corners of the cosmos, where processes are going on that we will never be able to mimic in Earth-bound laboratories.

What is an electronvolt?

  • Charged particles tend to speed up in an electric field, defined as an electric potential - or voltage - spread over a distance
  • One electronvolt (eV) is the energy gained by a single electron as it accelerates through a potential of one volt
  • It is a convenient unit of measure for particle accelerators, which speed particles up through much higher electric potentials
  • The Large Hadron Collider, for example, can accelerate particles up to an energy of several trillion electronvolts (TeV)
  • That is about equal to the energy in the motion of a flying mosquito

The "all-sky map" accompanying the publication represents all of the gamma-ray detections above 10 gigaelectronvolts that the Fermi telescope has seen in three years' worth of data.

The prior catalogues produced by Fermi contain literally thousands of gamma-ray emitters in the far-flung cosmos, corresponding to objects such as blazars and active galactic nuclei - both associated with black holes snacking at the centres of galaxies - or pulsars, fast-spinning neutron stars that flash our neighbourhood like a distant lighthouse.

But even in the most recent catalogue, the energy range above 10 gigaelectronvolts has been poorly explored.

This is largely untrodden ground in energy terms - the amount of light that comes towards us at these energies is far lower than that associated with lower-energy sources. But it is a range that Fermi is uniquely placed to catch.

For energy ranges above about 10 times that high, we have relied on ground-based telescopes, which do not catch the gamma rays directly.

At these highest imaginable energies, incoming gamma rays streak through the atmosphere, creating a shower of secondary particles that then emit light that telescopes on the ground can see.

This "Cerenkov" light is the focus of instruments such as the Magic facility on the island of Palma, or the newly commissioned Hawc telescope.

"The idea is to have some sort of bridge catalogue between the typical catalogue done by Fermi... which contains thousands of sources, and the domain of the Cerenkov telescopes that have been operating over 20 years," lead author of the new catalogue, David Paneque of the Max Planck Institute for Physics in Munich, Germany, told BBC News.

But, as with prior Fermi catalogues, Dr Paneque said that there are "unassociated sources" in the new catalogue.

"What that means is that we know it's a gamma-ray source, but we don't know what kind of source," he explained.

"We can't associate it with a radio object, with an optical object. It might be actually a new class of object - something that only emits in gamma rays."

One tantalising possibility is that these mystery sources are dwarf galaxies, rich with "dark matter" - the stuff believed to make up a majority of the Universe's mass but which has resolutely evaded detection so far.

"If we see a source that only emits gamma rays and not radio and optical, of course that would be a good candidate for dark matter," Dr Paneque said.

Nasa's deputy project scientist on the Fermi mission, Dave Thompson, said the new catalogue release was "exciting".

"A lot of work has gone into it," he told BBC News. "It represents another step in what we can do with Fermi, extending our reach in energy in more than an order of magnitude, and being able to see an entirely different picture of the sky," he said.

And although the number of unassociated sources is a smaller fraction of the total compared to prior catalogues, Dr Thompson said that "there are enough to be intriguing, and certainly following up on them will be one of the things we'll be doing - and we hope other people will too".

Curious mix of precision and brawn in a pouched super-predator

July 1, 2013 ? A bizarre, pouched super-predator that terrorised South America millions of years ago had huge sabre-like teeth but its bite was weaker than that of a domestic cat, new research shows.

Australian and American marsupials are among the closest living relatives of the extinct Thylacosmilus atrox, which had tooth roots extending rearwards almost into its small braincase.

"Thylacosmilus looked and behaved like nothing alive today," says UNSW palaeontologist, Dr Stephen Wroe, leader of the research team.

"To achieve a kill the animal must have secured and immobilised large prey using its extremely powerful forearms, before inserting the sabre-teeth into the windpipe or major arteries of the neck -- a mix of brute force and delicate precision."

The iconic North American sabre-toothed 'tiger', Smilodon fatalis, is often regarded as the archetypal mammalian super-predator.

However, Smilodon -- a true cat -- was just the end point in one of at least five independent 'experiments' in sabre-tooth evolution through the Age of Mammals, which spanned some 65 million years.

Thylacosmilus atrox is the best preserved species of one of these evolutionary lines -- pouched sabre-tooths that terrorised South America until around 3.5 million years ago.

For its size, its huge canine teeth were larger than those of any other known sabre-tooth.

Smilodon's killing behaviour has long attracted controversy, but scientists now mostly agree that powerful neck muscles, as well as jaw muscles, played an important role in driving the sabre-teeth into the necks of large prey.

Little was known about the predatory behaviour in the pouched Thylacosmilus.

To shed light on this super-predator mystery, Dr Wroe's team of Australian and US scientists constructed and compared sophisticated computer models of Smilodon and Thylacosmilus, as well as a living conical-toothed cat, the leopard.

These models were digitally 'crash-tested' in simulations of biting and killing behaviour. The results are published in the journal PLoS ONE.

"We found that both sabre-tooth species were similar in possessing weak jaw-muscle-driven bites compared to the leopard, but the mechanical performance of the sabre-tooths skulls showed that they were both well-adapted to resist forces generated by very powerful neck muscles," says Dr Wroe.

"But compared to the placental Smilodon, Thylacosmilus was even more extreme."

"Frankly, the jaw muscles of Thylacosmilus were embarrassing. With its jaws wide open this 80-100 kg 'super-predator' had a bite less powerful than a domestic cat. On the other hand -- its skull easily outperformed that of the placental Smilodon in response to strong forces from hypothetical neck muscles."

"Bottom line is that the huge sabres of Thylacosmilus were driven home by the neck muscles alone and -- because the sabre-teeth were actually quite fragile -- this must have been achieved with surprising precision."

"For Thylacosmilus -- and other sabre-tooths -- it was all about a quick kill."

"Big prey are dangerous -- even to super-predators -- and the faster the kill the less likely it is that the predator will get hurt -- or for that matter attract unwanted attention from other predators."

"It may not have been the smartest of mammalian super-predators -- but in terms of specialisation -- Thylacosmilus took the already extreme sabre-tooth lifestyle to a whole new level," says Dr Wroe.

How the Student Loan Interest Rate Hike Will Affect You - Higher ...

Student loans provide school funding for many undergraduate and graduate students.

Total student loan debt in the United States now hovers above $1 trillion, exceeding total credit card debt for the first time, and there are more than 37 million borrowers. Another shocking statistic: Almost 40 percent of those who took out student loans to help pay their way through college are under 30.

Congress has been deciding what to do with the rising debt and student loan interest rates. The deadline for a decision was today but Congress failed to reach a deal and interest rates doubled. Here is a breakdown of the student loan interest rate hike:

What: The interest rates on Federal Subsidized Stafford Loans have doubled from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent. According to Congress? Joint Economic Committee, this will cost the average college student an additional $2,600.

When: This change has been put into effect as of this morning.

Why: Back in 2007, Congress passed a bill that allowed student loan interest rates to gradually drop from the original 6.8 percent to 3.4 percent over the course of five years. In 2012, it was time to decide what would happen to the interest rates, but a consensus couldn?t be reached. An extension was put into effect to maintain the 3.4 percent interest rate for one year. That year has expired today and a solution has not been made.

Lawmakers could still potentially pass a bill to reverse the hike.

Proposals: House Republicans have passed a law that would address student loan interest rates in the long run. Under this plan, interest rates would change every year, varying with the market, starting with the 10-year Treasury note. The student loan interest rates would essentially pay down the deficit.

President Barack Obama proposed a solution in his FY2014 budget request, which prevents the rates from doubling. Like the Republican proposal, the President is proposing that the student loan interest rates be tied to the market. However, the rate will be locked in for the life of the loan once issued and not fluctuate according to the status of the economy each year.

The projected rates on federal Stafford Loans could rise to 7.7 percent in 2023 under these proposals, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

What This Means for You

The good thing about this rate hike is that it will only affect federal subsidized Stafford Loans that are issued on or after July 1, 2013.

Stafford Loans are available to both undergraduate and graduate students and are generally the most affordable. There are two kinds of Stafford Loans: Subsidized and unsubsidized.

Subsidized Stafford Loans are available to students that can prove financial need. The government pays the interest on these loans as long as the student is enrolled at least part-time in school. Unsubsidized Stafford Loans are available to all students and don?t require proof of financial struggle. However, unlike the subsidized loans, the student is responsible for the interest accrued while enrolled in school.

For any loans issued prior to July 1, the existing rate is locked in.

Steps You Can Take to Prepare

Subsidized Stafford Loans will still be more affordable than unsubsidized loans and private loans. However, taking out student loans to pay for your higher education should be a last resort. Universities and colleges almost always offer grants and scholarships to help pay for school. Filling out a Free Applications for Student Aid (FAFSA) will also help determine eligibility for Work Study programs.

If your only alternative for funding your education is to take out student loans, educate yourself on the options available to you. Your FAFSA will help define how much money you are qualified to receive, under specific interest rates.? You can look into subsidized and unsubsidized federal loans, PLUS Loans available for parents and graduate students, and private loans.

When the time comes to repay your loans, avoid going into default. If you foresee having difficulty repaying student loans, talk to your provider and they will work something out with you.

There are several repayment plans and options that are available for student borrowers. Some include:

Loan Consolidation: Under this program, student loans will be consolidated into one loan with a fixed interest rate. In other words, instead of making multiple payments to various lenders, you will make one monthly payment with a weighted interest rate.

Income-Based Repayment (IBR): IBR plans are based on income, family size and state of residence. The payments are capped at 15 percent of the borrower?s discretionary income. IBR does not apply to loans in default, Parents PLUS Loans, Perkins Loans or uninsured private loans.

Pay As You Earn Repayment: This plan is also known as Obama?s Student Loan Program. Monthly payments are based on similar requirements as the IBR, but they are capped at 10 percent of the borrower?s discretionary income. This plan offers the lowest monthly payment amount if you are facing financial hardship.

The student loan interest rate hike should not deter you from furthering your education. Everyone deserves to attend the college or university of their choice. Make it your responsibility to educate yourself on the issues that surround your future and the options available to you.

(AP) ? Senior European officials expressed concern Sunday at reports that U.S. intelligence agents bugged EU offices on both sides of the Atlantic, with some leftist lawmakers calling for concrete sanctions against Washington.

The president of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, said he was "deeply worried and shocked about the allegations of U.S. authorities spying on EU offices" made in a report published Sunday by German news weekly Der Spiegel.

The magazine said the surveillance was carried out by the U.S. National Security Agency, which has recently been the subject of leaks claiming it scanned vast amounts of foreign Internet traffic. The U.S. government has defended its efforts to intercept electronic communications overseas by arguing that this has helped prevent terror attacks at home and abroad.

Schulz said that if the allegations that the NSA bugged European Union offices were confirmed "it would be an extremely serious matter which will have a severe impact on EU-US relations."

Green Party leaders in the European Parliament, Rebecca Harms and Daniel Cohn-Bendit, called for an immediate investigation into the claims and suggested that recently launched negotiations on a trans-Atlantic trade treaty should be put on hold.

They also called for existing U.S.-EU agreements on the exchange of bank transfer and passenger record information to be canceled. Both programs have been labeled as unwarranted infringements of citizens' privacy by left-wing and libertarian lawmakers in Europe.

In Germany, where criticism of the NSA's surveillance programs has been particularly vocal, a senior government official accused the United States on Sunday of using Cold War methods against its allies by targeting EU offices in Washington, New York and Brussels.

"If the media reports are accurate, then this recalls the methods used by enemies during the Cold War," German Justice Minister Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger. "It is beyond comprehension that our friends in the United States see Europeans as enemies."

Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger called for an "immediate and comprehensive" response from the U.S. government to the claims in the Spiegel report, which cited classified U.S. documents taken by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden that the magazine said it had partly seen.

Spokespeople for the NSA and the office for the national intelligence director in Washington did not immediately respond to requests for comment Sunday.

According to Der Spiegel, the NSA planted bugs in the EU's diplomatic offices in Washington and infiltrated the building's computer network. Similar measures were taken at the EU's mission to the United Nations in New York, the magazine said.

Der Spiegel didn't publish the alleged NSA documents it cited nor say how it obtained access to them. But one of the report's authors is Laura Poitras, an award-winning documentary filmmaker who interviewed Snowden while he was holed up in Hong Kong.

The U.S. has been trying to track down Snowden, who is believed to currently be at Moscow's main airport with plans to travel to Ecuador to seek asylum.

The magazine also didn't specify how it learned of the NSA's alleged eavesdropping efforts at a key EU office in Brussels. There, the NSA used secure facilities at NATO headquarters nearby to dial into telephone maintenance systems that would have allowed it to intercept senior EU officials' calls and Internet traffic, the Spiegel report said.

Also Sunday, German federal prosecutors said they were examining whether the reported U.S. electronic surveillance programs broke German laws. In a statement, the Federal Prosecutors' Office said it was probing the claims so as to "achieve a reliable factual basis" before considering whether a formal investigation was warranted.

It said private citizens were likely to file criminal complaints on the matter, but didn't comment on the possible legal merits of such complaints.

Der Spiegel reported that at least one such complaint was lodged with prosecutors in the state of Hesse last week.
