The Weirdest Thing on the Internet Tonight: The Arsehole Gene (NSFW)

In a world where seemingly every physiological foible is being reclassified as a disease or an addiction (looking at you, husky sex addicts) it was really only a matter of time until the biological mechanism behind assholism surfaced. As this documentary by December Works explains, it's not your fault that you're a poorly-socialized, narcissistic, self-serving little prick (unless you're Justin Bieber). It's genetics.

Soon to be a Google technical writer | ffeathers

I have a bit of news to share:? I?m joining Google and saying farewell to Atlassian.

So long Atlassian, and thanks!

Friday 5 July was my last day at Atlassian. It was awesome being part of the Atlassian phenomenon for six years. A huge thank you to all Atlassians, and everyone in the wider Atlassian community: customers, add-on developers, experts, technical communicators and doc sprinters around the world! You?ve given me such great opportunities, and made me push myself into trying things that challenged me personally. (If someone had said six years ago that they?d spotted me doing any form of public speaking, my somewhat hysterical reply would have been, ?Ha ha ha, nope, that?s some other Sarah.?)

Hallo Google

It?s time to go adventuring again. In a couple of weeks? time, I?ll be a technical writer in the Developer Relations team at Google Sydney. This is tremendously exciting, and just a bit scary. That?s the best way to feel when starting something new.

I took this photo on a recent walk in the bush after a heavy rain storm. It?s a puddle reflecting the trees and sky.

Lyft Takes On SoCal: Launches In San Diego, Plans Community Meeting In LA

Lyft carOn-demand ride-sharing startup Lyft is looking to make more of an impact in Southern California, with a launch in San Diego and increased community efforts in Los Angeles. That'll open a new market for the company and hopefully quell some regulatory issues that it's faced in another of the cities it operates in. First, the launch: Lyft has officially opened for business in San Diego, which will be the company's fifth market since launching?in San Francisco?a little more than a year ago. After a successful run here, the startup has been busy expanding into other cities, including Los Angeles, Seattle and Chicago.

Tim Cook reportedly wants to boost iPhone sales at Apple retail, teases a bevy of new products for fall

Apple hoping to increase iPhone sales from Apple Stores with new marketing, incentive programs

Apple Stores will reportedly be changing how they market and sell the iPhone, in hopes that more phones will be sold through their own Apple Store retail locations. This according to comments Tim Cook was said to have made at Apple's annual retail leadership gathering. Mark Gurman of 9to5Mac:

The iPhone is Apple?s central ?gateway product? to other devices like iPads and Macs, so it is critical that the Apple smartphone is sold via an Apple Store so new customers are immediately exposed to iPads, Macs and other devices on the showroom floor. Even though 80% of iPhones are not sold at Apple Stores, 50% of all serviced iPhones are troubleshooted, repaired, or replaced at Apple Store Genius Bars. Cook reportedly hinted that he would like those numbers to be more in line.

Incentives will be offered to customers who buy iPhones from Apple Stores, with Apple's 2013 Back to School promotions being the first part of the new push. Another element that was hinted at during the event was an iPhone trade-in program at Apple Stores. Details on the program are scarce at this time though it appears that it might allow customers to trade in their older phone for a refurbished version of a newer phone. The retail leaders are said to have left the event confident in this fall's product lineup.

It's likely that we'll see this new approach with the launch of new iPhone, iPad, and Mac models, widely expected for this fall. Apple's physical stores have often been credited as playing a major role in Apple's success over the last 12 years, in part because it let customers walk in and see the entire selection of products that Apple was offering. With increasing competition in mobile, the retail stores will continue to be critical differentiators, especially given that Apple can be in full control of the presentation of their products, something that isn't true in other retail locations.

Did you buy your iPhone at an Apple retail location? If not, why not, and is there any way Apple could convince you to buy your next one there?

Tree rings reveal El Ni?o tied to recent global warming

El Ni?o, the notoriously capricious weather phenomenon, has a clear pattern of unusually aggressive behavior throughout the past century. Scientists see a link to global warming.

Every seven years ? or sometimes every two years, or maybe four years ? El Ni?o turns a bucket of rainfall over western South America, sending floodwaters cascading over coastal Ecuador and typhoons spiraling into Peru. Other parts of countries get no rain at all, withering in a crippling dry heat. Fish die, and so do the birds that live off them. The economy of those coastal countries buckles. Nations wait for respite.

For all the damage it does, El Ni?o, a rise in water temperatures off western South America's coast, is difficult to track, a fickle phenomenon that arrives unannounced and gives little notice as to when it might depart ? maybe a year later, or maybe two years.

But new research suggests that the phenomenon was uncharacteristically active in the late 20th century, relative to the previous seven centuries. That in turn suggests that El Ni?o is more responsive to climate change than previously believed and that it might be possible to better predict future conditions.

El Ni?o is not a well-understood phenomenon. So, pinning its capricious behavior on manmade global warming is challenging, since El Ni?o waxes and wanes like a fair-weather friend over short lengths of time. Those short busts and booms could be pegged to short-term, natural weather fluxes, as opposed to a long-term, the warming of the Earth.

But this latest research, published in Nature Climate Change, looks with longer hindsight on the phenomenon, reflecting on some 700 years of its behavior. That long look back revealed some clear patterns that suggest the phenomenon is waltzing in step with global warming.

Scientists compiled some 2,222 tree-ring chronologies of the past seven centuries from both the mid-latitudes in both hemispheres and the tropics. Tree rings can provide an accurate record of historical climate pattern, packing in their width and color information about the precipitation, wind, and temperature conditions at the time at which the tree was growing.

Scientists found that the tree ring patterns in the 20th -century suggested that El Ni?o had been more active then than during the last seven centuries, meaning ?that long-term El Ni?o patterns have dovetailed with the global warming that characterized that century.

?This suggests that many models underestimate the sensitivity to radiative perturbations in greenhouse gases,? said Shang-Ping Xie, co-author and meteorology professor at the International Pacific Research Center. ?Our results now provide a guide to improve the accuracy of climate models and their projections of future ENSO activity.?

?If this trend of increasing ENSO activity continues, we expect to see more weather extremes such as floods and droughts,? she said.

Content Websites That Become Income Producing Website ...

All successful websites are content-rich information sites. These site are keyword-focussed and theme based. The purpose of content websites is to provide site-visitors with relevant information. The theme of your website can be any topic you are knowledgeable about. It can be about a product, hobby, invention, ebook or a passion you have. The point is to freely provide quality information to please the internet searchers.Information can be provided in all mediums. In fact for better impact, a portion of your content should be pictures, audio and video streaming.

Searchers and Search Engines

The number of internet users is well in excess of one billion and expected that it could reach (2)two billion persons using the internet by 2012. Responding to the ?wants? of those internet users?when it comes to searching the internet is vital for the success of every online business. If you provide quality relevant website content?searchers will show their appreciation by:

1.Bookmarking your site and returning later

2.Joining your newsletter list

3.Following your links and buying a product.

Any of the above actions will be noted by the search engines and therefore your content website ?ranking? will rise and rise?the more your site is visited.Your information site will receive big numbers of natural search traffic. What did you do??You freely gave quality information that relates to what the searchers are looking for. This is what I call ?Information Marketing!?

Opt-In Newsletters

An important part of this process is to maintain contact with the people who subscribe into your newsletter list. These subscribers are ?interested? in your website theme. They were not forced to join your list?to get your information. This was the ?ploy? of the gateway or capture-pages to get you onto their newsletter list. Providing real relevant information was not a serious concern. That tactic resulted in large lists of ?curious? but uninterested people?who?in the end just cost you valuable time.

By sending regular newsletters to your subscriber list?you provide further quality information and in time you build relationships with those interested people. Also you build a level of trust and many will become customers or join your business.

Multi-Streams of Income

Through your website pages,on site video streaming, audio and very importantly through your newsletters?you can promote your affiliate programs, ebooks, network marketing or any online business. You may have a ?primary? business that you want to direct the majority of your effort towards; That?s fine, but whatever your business or your website theme?you?ll find other related products that people interested in your theme can use.

A method that all successful content websites use is to sell advertising space to search marketing groups?such as Google. You can have a few of these Ads on each of your web-pages. Often if a site-visitor is not interested in your website theme, newsletter or products?they may click a few of these Google Ads before they leave your site. This leaves a few cents on the ?table?. Imagine if your site traffic is?5000 visitors per day and each earned you 10 cents?through all your income streams?that amounts to $15000 per month! This is the main benefit of having your own site?where you dictate the income sources!

Marketing You Website

Marketing your website can be low-cost,but it has to be effective! An ordinary content site marketed correctly?will be successful. However a top quality content-rich site?marketed poorly will be a failure! With the above in mind it is worth noting, that some successful content website owners?do not market at all! The reason is generally, that what they are promoting is highly ?sought after?.

So, in general you do need to do some marketing to assist natural search. In fact natural search traffic increases as your ?ranking? increases?as your marketing effort sends more visitors to your site. The marketing methods that you can employ are explained through the links below. Take the time to browse around the site.

Conclusion

Content is king because genuine content information is what the internet searchers want?and? What they want?you should provide! As a result of doing that?you?ll find that the search engines will ?work? with you. High traffic numbers lead to product sales or whatever ?most wanted action? you?re seeking through you?re website business. Having your own quality relevant content website?and pointing all your marketing techniques towards that site?will lead to your online success!

6 Radical Infrastructure Schemes That Almost Changed NYC Forever

6 Radical Infrastructure Schemes That Almost Changed NYC Forever

The East River? Oh, we dammed that thing up and threw a new City Hall on top. The Hudson? Filled it with traffic years ago. New Yorkers have never been prudes about changing the natural landscape of their city, but if you dig into the archives, you'll find dozens of ideas so radical, they make present-day Gotham feel like a nature reserve.

These days, the ballooning cost of construction combined with environmental and preservation issues conspire to make extreme infrastructural projects a moot point. Hell, it's taken us almost a century to build the 2nd Avenue Subway. But in the middle of the 20th century, a booming economy and a renaissance in public infrastructure made it seem like anything was possible in New York?literally, anything.

Six plans from those years follow, ranging from the grand to the gargantuan. Makes Bloomberg's Vision 2020 plan look a bit puny in comparison, no?

Infill the Hudson River, 1934

In March, 1934, Modern Mechanix featured the daring plan of Norman Sper, ?noted publicist and engineering scholar? (maybe publicist meant something different back then?), who envisioned adding ten square miles of land to Manhattan by infilling the mighty Hudson River. Sper proposed creating a massive, multi-layered grid that would connect New Jersey to Manhattan, solving problems like housing and transit which, according to the editors, ?are threatening to devour the city's civilization like a Frankenstein monster.?

It?s hard for us to imagine the optimism felt about modern engineering in the 1930s and 40s, and today, Sper?s plan seems like folly. But the magazine asked a handful of established engineers about it, and many of them described it as visionary. ?Provided with sufficient money and time, particularly money, the project could be carried through to completion with unquestionable success,? said one engineer. ?... It would be quite in keeping with President Roosevelt?s rehabilitation and N.R.A. plan and put an enormous army of men to work. I heartily endorse the plan, though I am fully aware of the almost insurmountable impediments which appear at first study of the idea.?

Estimated cost: $17 billion*

Build a Massive Hudson River Airport, 1946

The man who owned the Chrysler Building?William Zeckendorf?was behind this idea to build "Manhattan's Dream Airport." Zeckendorf proposed a 144-block-long floating airport on the edge of the Hudson River, where planes could take off on the long roof and boats could dock at its edges.

It's hard to know how New Yorkers of the day reacted to the plan, which was sited on the edge of what was then a still-developing neighborhood. But as Untapped Cities points out, a similar (but satirical) plan to turn Central Park into an airport received over 85,000 earnest signatures?which should tell you something about how "green space" stacks up against "long cab rides" for most modern-day New Yorkers.

Estimated cost: $35 billion*

Draining the East River, 1924

According to the editors at Popular Science, in 1924, New York was losing $1.5 million a day on traffic congestion. The solution? Get rid of the East River, of course. Dr. John A. Harriss, a "special deputy police commissioner in charge of traffic," was the progenitor of this particular scheme, which would've required the construction of two dams?one at the Williamsburg Bridge, the other, near Hell Gate in Harlem. In between, Harriss envisioned a broad avenue of cars and small pedestrian routes, centered by a massive new City Hall. Basically, Brasilia in New York City.

A Super-Highway Slicing Through SoHo, 1940-1962

The mercifully unfulfilled Lower Manhattan Expressway was one of Robert Moses' plans to modernize Manhattan. LOMEX, as the plan is known, came close to leveling a huge 14-block swatch of Lower Manhattan to build a ten-lane highway stretching from the Holland Tunnel to the Manhattan and Williamsburg Bridges. Moses envisioned the highway edged on both side by gigantic public housing complexes.

We actually have LOMEX (along with the destruction of Penn Station) to thank for the development of historic preservation in New York City. Jane Jacobs led the fight against the project, and ultimately, it was abandoned. It's hard to imagine that anyone ever seriously entertained the idea?but we need only look across the East River to see what could have been, since Moses was central in creating the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, the highway that required the razing of thousands of homes in each borough.

Estimated cost: $749 million*

A Geodesic Dome Over Midtown Manhattan, 1960.

Buckminster Fuller's geodesic dome was proposed with the best intentions: It would've created a bubble of clear air stretching from the Hudson to the East River, between 21st and roughly 64th streets. Of course, in reality, it likely would've led to strict urban segregation in Manhattan, between those "inside the bubble," and those without.

Estimated cost: $7.5 billion*

A Bridge Over the Hudson, circa 1915

Ever wonder why there are no bridges between Lower Manhattan and New Jersey? One of the main reasons is that too many massive freighter ships passed through the bay on their way to Manhattan's docks. But architect Alfred C. Bossom envisioned a seemingly simple solution: A bridge 200 feet above the waterline, more than enough space for ships of the day to pass unfettered.

Bossom christened his idea the Victory Bridge, angled as a celebration of the end of World War I. The concept never took of, perhaps because of the sheer size and cost (the towers themselves would've been more than 800 feet high), but Bossom was right on, in some ways: The Holland Tunnel was completed underneath the exact same route, in 1927.
