Last week I was talking to another mom about Christmas ideas for our kids. ?She told me her son is completely nuts about the Skylanders Giants Game System. ?I had to admit that I didn?t even know what that was. ?So on the way home from school I asked my kids if they knew what Skylanders is. ?They proceeded to give me a detailed description of what it is and how it works. ?I decided it was time to head to Best Buy and see for myself what all the hype is about Skylanders Giants.
Skylanders has been around for about a year but this is the first I?ve heard about it. They are releasing the newest characters for the game ? the Giants! You purchase a starter pack (It costs $74.99 at all the stores I have checked.) The starter pack includes 2 regular figures and 1 giant as well as the portal and the game.
Once you own the figures, you can even take them with you to a friends house if they have the Portal. The figures act as a sort of USB device and store their game and data inside.
You can buy the game for the Xbox 360, Wii or Playstation and DS. Once you make the purchase, you pop in the game, plug in the device, pop the figures on the dock and begin play.

My experience
Since I am not the gamer in the family, I decided to drive over to Best Buy and take a look for myself. With 3 kids who love to play electronic games and devices I wanted to see if it measured up to the advertisements and the hype.
I loved the graphics and colors. I also loved the fact that the characters are cartoonish. I am always looking for games that are fun for all three of my kids and can span the age difference between 5 and almost 11.
The characters looked well made and seemed to be sturdy enough to handle the wear and tear that the kids would give them by switching them back and forth.
The portal or docking station for the characters is small and unobtrusive. It can easily sit beside the tv or game console and not get in the way.
Will my kids get a set for Christmas?
This remains to be seen! At $74.99 it is a little steep for a video game. However, I like the fact that it interchanges with the other characters and can be personalized for each of the giants and creatures. I could imagine that this would be a fun gift for Christmas morning.
